Thumbs up A Nasty Supercharged Old School Datsun 260z

I was out running errands yesterday in town and saw this car at a local grocery store.

I should of asked the guy for a ride.......damnit really should have!

it sounded so friggin nasty when he punched it leaving the parking lot.

impressed me enough to shoot some pics and put together this little video of it.

My soon to be finished Datsun Z will put down about 475-500whp on the original straight six. It will pull away from many LSx and SBC converted Datsuns.

Do the chassis and suspension points hold up with that kind of hp without significant reinforcement?

I remember back when,,,,,,,,,,,cheap popular V8 vega's had lots of frame twist.

better chassis was a ford Mavrick.

Mercury Capri was back then too, mine had headers for a 3 liter cyl.

7 is grand but nine is fine, was the RPM saying for the capris.

this 260z had a full cage in the rear, (don't know if it was tubbed for tires/diff, but that was A LOT of rubber under it..........I dunno underneath for frame).

As a p-car owner who's corner balanced his old 1982 SC, what struck me really about this 260Z was that the suspension seemed spot on, perfect ride height, no sag......

man did it squat and hook up when he left the parking lot.

not tire squeal, but weight transfer.

Warp Drive - Engage.

Love the Z cars. There's a super nice local 240 with a LSx, full suspension, etc. Sweet car.

Thanks Byron! It has taken many years to get to this point but looking forward to keep working on it and completing it soon.

How? back in the 70s I played with lots of L24-L28s ,big valves, porting , cams ,compression etc short of very high pressure turbo charging I don,t see 3 to 4 hp per cu inch. Turbo power calculations usually run about 100% increase per atmosphere pressure. ie the 150-180 hp engine becomes 300-350 at 15 psi boost. Are you expecting to run 30 psi. ??.

Actually you can get 330-340 hp out of the L28 without a turbo on it. Quite a few guys have done it. Its not cheep and you you could build twice the car for half the money but it can be done. I have had several (17) 240z's There just my favorite car, always have been. Rebello Racing in Antioch, CA will build you a very hot motor around 250-275hp for 6-7000.00 bucks. I'm a Weber dealer and sell lots of triple carb kits to datsun guys chasing hp. Here is a picture of my 71 Fairlady Z and the rust free parts car that will donate its sheet metal to the Fairlady. Oh and I'm not a fan of that 260z

I used to be a Dellorto dealer. Sold lots of triples for the Z cars. last time I built one was in about 81 so perhaps things have changed a bit. I used to use a 280 block and crank, longer l16 rods and a flat top piston. Along with an early e31? head with big valves. compression was around 10:1 static. Racer brown cam (numbers escape my ageing head). Factory competition dept header and dual 2 inch exhaust.(or 2 1/2 exh with Corvair turbo muffler.3 x2 40 mm carbs
I estimated hp around 230. With a 5 speed from a 280 and a 4.38 final drive it ran high 14,s in the 1/4 suggesting 230 hp also.
I,ve not been involved with the Z car since mid 80s but I have a good friend who still has his 73 which had one of my engines in it. He is the past pres of the Z car club in Toronto. I,ll have to ask him whats happening re hp next time I see him.

Now we build 3.1L stroker motors. Crank out of a Maxima Diesel 9mm rods out of a 240z n42 head ported, polished reshape the bowls big valves big cam. It just takes lots of money on the head work. Yasin's (slow&rusty) motor will be turbo charged. You have to remember 240z in the SCCA in the early 70's with "stock" motors where making 220 at the wheels. The L28 motor in Japan was like the chevy 350 here in America. It was the go to motor. In the 80's there where 280zx's running 12 second 1/4 mile times without turbo's and well into the 10's with turbos.

I did the big valves and beautiful unshrouded combustion chambers . My idea of a stroker was a 260 or 280 crank in a max overbored stock block. No diesel cranks were available then . As I recall this from 1980 it is a little foggy. I was always building for the street, so traction was tire limited (CN36 Pirellis on 14x7 rims wouldn,t cut it today.
What boost pressure is needed to generate 475 hp. from a 3.1 ?

You start getting into real boost 20 -25 psi There are a few guys that have done it. A couple guys are well over 500hp and 25-30psi. If you google "star road fairlady z" they do some very nice work in japan. Several Z cars with 300 hp plus with no turbo

I've had probably 10-15 different Datsun Zs with my favorites being a black 78 280, and a blue 71 240Z. I actually had a 95 Ford Mustang GT motor and transmission and wiring harness sitting in my barn from a cheap wrecked GT I had gotten and parted out. I wanted to slip the 5.0L (last year before the 4.6L V8) into my 71 Z and have twice the horsepower of the original 2.4L. I would still have Datsuns if I could find them rust free like the Porsches.
