Most of the time it's from a drone, sometimes high and slow.

Some missiles also have cameras in their nosecones, which is why it goes dark on impact.

Sometimes from the launch platform itself.

Or if you are N Korea you use Call of Duty footage.

Most of what I have seen is the cockpit display of the pilots video for a laser guided bomb. To target one of those the pilot has to keep the cursor on the target (it is aided once it is designated). The guidance homes on the (coded) spot of light.

The weapons with the data link and video typically cost > a million dollars so you better really need to take it out if you are going to use that.

EDIT: the grainy black and white is because it is the forward looking infra red.

Isn't the pilot ripping by at some crazy speed? The image look like the camera position never changes.

Does the video look like this without the HUD overlay?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j7IqtL7FztA

That is a missile but a gravity Joint Direct Attack Munition the carrier would be much higher and more zoomed in with the video tacking the target.

Here is an updated LANTRIN pod device with video.

It used to be this in the old-old days, but not anymore. We're talking high-def and colour video in the gov't-spec systems.

I have little doubt the video we get to see is not the stuff the pilot sees. I bet they res it down so the bad guys don't really know the capabilities.

Problem is...that we are really only targeting equipment. We need Apaches, AC 130s and A10s to fly low and loiter while they kill all the cockroaches...one by one. We really dont want to make anyone mad at us.

I might work for a company that - let's say - produces 'optical things' that are made for both the military as well as consumers (hunters, even law enforcement for some applications). There is a big difference between specs and what the consumer is limited to. I guess it's like when the first GPS units came out, didn't they have an accuracy of something around 20 meters but the gov't intentionally degraded it to about 100 meters or so because they were worried about the bad guys knowing where we or our equipment was?

This is not what's happening where I might work, rather the technology that's allowed to be sold to the consumer is much less accurate than the gov't-spec version. It's like high-def vs standard-def or even old grainy non-HD antennae TV!

The specs aren't exactly private so the bad guys do know what we have (at least in my scenario).

What upset's me the most is seeing a jeep with 2 people in it, on a road to nowhere, geting blown up by a million dollar bomb. God d###, take the mf's out and all the rest of them too. If you have the power, USE IT. Such a weak policy by this POS in the White House.

Right.... wasting a high value bomb on a low value target is stupid. This is what CAS aircraft are designed for. Super Tacano, A-10, Sandy, PA-48.... put some inexpensive bullets in those Jeep drivers. Save the GBU for a building or a wedding party.

It is hard to have those assets in the vicinity when a target of opportunity appears. A fighter loitering at altitude with a laser guided bomb capable of hitting a moving target on the other hand gets the job done. Don't get too close...

I'm not sure how much resolution current IR imagers have.

Don't worry; it's usually more like dropping a new 911 on them, base model.

Just curious what information color conveys in an IR image?

Agree.
