iOS 8 - Features

Question for those who've installed iOS 8 or read up on it.

There is an Instant Hotspot feature. As I understand it, iOS 8 can connect your Mac to your iPhone via peer-to-peer (adhoc) WiFi and use your iPhone's cellular data connection to provide Internet connectivity to your Mac. My question is, does this require you to activate the hotspot feature with your cellular carrier? That costs an additional $25 or so w/ ATT. If not, I can dump my Verizon MiFi and just rely on my iPhone to get internet on the MacBook on the rare occasions when my MacBook doesn't see WiFi. I have an unlimited data plan for the iPhone w/ ATT.

Tethering on AT&T is allowed depending on your plan. If you have a 5GB or higher data plan it is allowed. If you have the unlimited plan for your iPhone, that is definitely not allowed,

Feature that I've noticed the most is a dramatic performance slow-down on any older iOS device.

Do like that my incoming iphone calls can be answered via Facetime from the tablet.

Porsche-O-Phile 10-17-2014 09:31 AM

That's what TetherMe is for...

I'm posting from my tethered PC laptop right now. I think the mobile share plans with AT&T all include tethering for no extra fee.

widgeon13 10-17-2014 03:34 PM

Yep, they are just hoping you go over that allowance.

Gogar 10-17-2014 03:41 PM

As mentioned, I think the "new" ATT plans have free tether but data plans.

I have legacy unlimited data and I can tether but it is extra.

My legacy unlimited at $89 with the tether upcharge is probably the same as the "new plan" with unlimited. I'm guessing.

Yes...Just asked the question myself yesterday. As posted by others, I was told by AT&T it was free if you don't have unlimited. Verison had a monthly fee.

Sorry for the high jack - my 5s is a mess with this update. Buggy as hell - camera, alarm clock, auto rotation, false charge indication, battery life. WTF???

Can I go back to 7x?

My last Apple phone. The new ones don't do it for me either.

Chris and Aigel hit the nail on the head. The only feature that iOS 8 gave my iPad are slowness, buggy, apps closing down randomly, not remembering my forum login info, slow as molasses, oh and did I mention slow and buggy. Damn operating system is a POS. I have searched for a fix and all I see are posts and articles about the problem, not a fix in sight.

Thankfully I did not "update" my iPhone 5. And I refuse to buy a new iPad to correct the problem.

Apple is releasing 8.1 on Monday. Hopefully that will fix some of your issues.

Man I hope so... Not thrilled about having to hack my iPads back to iOS7 but I'm going to if it doesn't get better. Typically what they've done is release an update like this and freeze it on old devices, essentially obsoleting them.

I can't wait for Monday if that's true. My iPad2 has become useless since the downgrade to iOS8.

You guys realize that you did the equivalent of installing windows 8 on a computer originally sold with XP. Of course it doesn't work as well on older slower hardware. It was designed for the newer faster chipsets.

widgeon13 10-20-2014 02:51 AM

Two questions.

A) How will ATT know if I'm using my iPhone as a hotspot? I have the unlimited plan.

B) When I try to do two step authentication and have sms messages sent to me (because I don't get cell coverage at the house) the sms messages are not delivered until I go to an area where I get cell coverage. With update 8.1 will that change since they can now forward sms messages to a computer???

fintstone 10-20-2014 04:07 AM

A. You can't get the it to work unless you jailbreak.

AT&T supposedly has some sort of sniffer software that they can use to find folks using it as a hotspot with a jailbreaked phone.

widgeon13 10-20-2014 11:52 AM

Well, still no hotspot for my ATT unlimited plan iphone and still no receiving SMS messages. That just sucks.

But I can spend money with my credit cards and Apple Pay.

^this is why I don't upgrade operating systems unless absolutely necessary. My Apple devices (ipad2 and iphone 5) are both still running ios6. I've run into 1 app so far that I was interested in that I couldn't use because it required ios7. Same deal with my windows PCs - resist any and all software updates.

I've been following this practice for years and it helps to stretch out the useful life of the hardware considerably.

calimedeiros 10-20-2014 12:52 PM

ya how can I go back to io7 my phone sucks now

cstreit 10-20-2014 06:36 PM

Plenty of tutorials on downgrading... Google it.
