Nissan Titan pickup...

While our Nissan Rogue is at the dealer getting the trans fixed, they lent us a new Nissan Titan crew cab. It's a nice ride with a brown exterior and flat black wheels. Looks good. Has a Nismo cat back exhaust system. Rides great and has just a slight mellow sound with a little burble.

I really like the interior and in particular, the interior dimensions. Plenty of room for me to stretch out (I'm 6'-4") and have plenty of room behind me, which my current F150 doesn't have.

The down side is it only gets 12 mpg city and 18 mpg hwy from the V8.

I hear Nissan might be coming out with a diesel, but it's a V8. Not sure about mpg.

I'm not towing and don't haul around too much stuff (the bed is very short), so this might be a truck to look at.

2014's are about $29k compared to Dodge and Ford at $50k for crew cabs. That does buy a lot of gas.

Anybody have experience with them?

I remember having a few come through my dealership about a year after they came out. They were nice, have pretty good pickup to them. I know of a few in my hometown owned by friends of friends with close to 200k on them with little issues.

I hated the loop style carpet they use(d?). Pain in the butt to keep clean.

One of the owners of the dealership is an oral surgeon worth somewhere around 10 figures. He drove an Infiniti QX56 for a few months (same platform) and gave it back to the store to sell because he couldn't afford the gas! (Did I mention he was extremely cheap?)

I'd be really interested in seeing a diesel version. Maybe that would prompt Toyota to start putting diesels into their trucks as well.

What kind of MPG are you getting? My wife has been driving the loaner and says it's a gas hog.

We had a 2005 Armada, which is basically a Titan with a 3rd row and trunk. Loved everything but the mpg, drove it from 60k to 120k with no issues. Great motor, good steering and handling by full size suv standards, the interior wore well and I found it to be very well thought out.

Just FYI regarding the domestic trucks, they normally sell for about 25% off MSRP. Our 2012 F150 SuperCrew 4x4 had an MSRP of about $45k, I think we paid about $33k. I don't know how much inventory the GM trucks have, but I suspect that good deals can be had on the current style F150 with a new model coming out in early 2015.

I have a 420hp 6.2L Silverado 1500. It gets 16-18 city and 20-24 highway. Cylinder deactivation feature really helps the mileage.

One can only hope... though they already have a full lineup of diesels, they just dont export them to the US.

Some of the numbers on them like the diesel Rav4 and Tacoma (Hilux) are amazing. Decent HP, great torque and impressive MPG.

Toyota has signed an agreement with Cummins for the option to use the exact same 5.0L V8 diesel as the Nissan Titan will have soon. Remember, neither of those brands have heavy-duty trucks (ala F250/F350) so it's as much about power/capability as fuel economy.

The Titan is a nice truck. All ten people that bought them, love them.

That's funny. Cant say the last time I saw one on the road, I would imagine you should be able to get a good deal on one.

I actually see a few of them on the road in SoCal, they sell a lot of Nissans here. In the Midwest, haven't seen many.

When they came out in 2004 I would have picked the Titan over anything. But it hasn't really changed much, and the competition has improved exponentially.

I think I read where Nissan produced 20k cars vs 500k cars for the big 3.

Not a fan of Chrysler products, but Dodge just brought out their V-6 turbo diesel in the 1/2 ton. Heard they are selling like hot-cakes and get 25-28 mpg on the highway? A buddy just bought one.

I'm not convinced on the half-ton diesel excitement. Where I live diesel is costlier than gas and the mileage on the new Ram 1500 diesel is good but not great compared to modern V8s with cylinder deactivation, VVT, etc. If I were doing a lot of towing I'd want a 2500 or 3500 anyhow so the only reason to get a 1500 diesel is fuel economy but I don't think the savings add up... Thoughts?

Grew up in a family that had a full-size F-350 7.3L Power Stroke. My dad bought it brand new for close to $50k in 1999 and it's got probably close to 150k on it now.At the time, they new body had just come out and his truck was the only crew cab, long bed, 4x4 Lariat model on the east coast. With a Banks Six-Gun and Diablo tuner, it's pretty damn fast and will pull anything I'd ever need to.

After that, lighter trucks just don't cut it for me.

Having said that, I'll be keeping my eye on the smaller Japanese diesel news. I can't justify a gas engine pick up, just doesn't seem right.

Having said that, I've told my dad on multiple occasions that when he goes, I don't want any money. Give it to my mom and sister. I just want his cars (F-350, 300SDL Turbo, built Jeep TJ), tools (extensive), guns (dozens) and camping gear (top of the line everything).

There's a good thread with some first hand feedback on the new Dodge diesel, a little searching should find it. MPG is marginally better, tow performance is inferior to the more powerful half ton V8 engines. Personally I'm not swayed.

Edit: here you go: What are your thoughts on new 1/2ton diesel ram?

They sale a lot here in So. Calif. I think the Midwest may have the resistance because its not "American"....i think it was built in Kentucky though. 2015 models i think are changing, I dont care much for the newer Chevy, Ford trucks but thats me. Very happy with the Titan...strong,reliable and comfortable plus great room for family.

I have an 08 with ~90k miles on it. Average 18mpg normal driving and about 10mpg when towing a 20' enclosed trailer. Never had any issues and would probably buy another.

Looked at a 2014 Nissan Titan with 15k on the clock. Had every bell and whistle you could imagine, plus a Nismo cat back exhaust and 20" black wheels. Looked, sounded and drove very well. I want to say the wheels were $2000 and the exhaust was $1000.

Dealer came down to $34,500 with tags, taxes, etc. etc. etc. and wouldn't budge after that. We walked out to think about it.

Edmunds has it at $36,019 for retail.
http://www.edmunds.com/nissan/titan/2014/tmv-appraise-results.html

NADA has it at $37,500 for retail.
http://www.nadaguides.com/Cars/2014/Nissan/Titan-Crew-Cab-V8/Crew-Cab-SL-4WD/Values

Thoughts on the price?
