Who makes the Porsche of sewing machines?

Yes, I know I am stretching the envelope of the PPOT brain trust here but here goes...

Background: I love my wife for many reasons, she is always thinking of others first, she is smart (BA in Business) and by her own description she is a "pioneer women" i.e. she can cook, clean, do repairs around the house, does crafty things...

And she sews...

So her daughter is visiting on break from college and they are doing the Christmas decorating, cooking, and sewing...

My wife has the Sears Kenmore sewing machine that her dad bought her mom waaay back in the day and at the time it was a big deal on their limited income.

Wife also has this machine called a surger that apparently does the thick seams around the collar/sleeves/hem of garments...

This machine is the cause of great mumbling and grumbling...

So long thread short... I'm clueless when it comes to sewing machines...a quick look at craigslist shows everything from $50 to $5000

The Kenmore seems to work fine... however do modern machines sew AND serge?

If so who makes a good one (easy to maintain and operate)?

Thanks!

Non-industrial/commercial grade and just for everyday use, Singer. My mom is a seamstress and before her days with the ginormous industrial sewing machine she has, she always used a Singer. I have a Singer that I have used for over 15 years, and it was the cheap model. I probably need to get a new one. The new ones are all fancy with computer programs to do embroidery and stuff. Mine is old school.

Well if you want the Porsche, I think it would have to be a German Pfaff. The womenfolk in my family swear by these.

That name had come to my mind also, just not the spelling. You run into lots of their machines in sail lofts also. I don't know if they make a machine with all the new bells and whistles but they do make some sweet running machines.

Cheers Richard

Very happy with my old Singer. (Yes I sew..... man kind of stuff, patches on uniforms, upholstery, etc, etc... )

Always wanted to pick up a used heavy duty commercial machine to do stuff like boat canvas. and othe heavy materials.

Bernina is the gold standard amongst the movie production wardrobe seamstresses.
Swiss, not German.

Overlock machine (what sergers are really called) - 4 thread - Husqvarna Viking.

They have different levels from craft sewer to professional.

Straight stitch/overlock combo machines aren't really true overlocks... You need 2 machines - the standard - like your Kenmore that keeps on trucking, and a real overlock (or serger).

Also - some people like a cover stitch machine - and some overlock machines have special attachments to do a cover stitch (3 thread hemmer). If you do a lot of hemming, especially on knits - getting something that can do a cover stitch is a great timesaver.

I spent much of my misplaced youth sewing costumes - from Renaissance (SCA) to SciFi.

Today it's called "cosplay" - that scene inspires equal parts disgust and fascination.

My wife and her friends are actually having the sewing machine version of a LAN party as I write this. I guess that would've been a "quilting bee" a century ago? What we save by her making X-mas gifts, Halloween costumes, and clothes for the kids she spends on piles of fabric and "notions".

She's kind of a sewing badass so I had a pinstriper buddy pimp out her machine a bit.

My wife has been pining for a Singer 7258. It is a surger and does a bunch of different stitches plus button holes etc. Price isn't bad. Will probably wait until spring to get it though so I can't tell you how well they work.

My first wife was a sewer, had a Husquvarna when we met, then up-graded to a Bernina.

But my 'main' machine is this weird Izek/Singer/Gameboy (yep, Nintendo). The gameboy has the stitches in it and you download them into the machine - it is weird, but strong and you can get billions of stitches for it, and it 'sings' to me when I download stitches - smile.
