project car idea
hey everyone. im looking for a project porsche but im not sure what to look for in terms of models or years or whatever. unfortunately my budget and mechanical skills are somewhat limited since Im 16 but im a fast learner. 10grand would be the sky-high limit, im thinking more of 5-7grand total. so far the 914 seems good - cheap and i think their neat. (i know theyve got rust problems) any ideas or feedback would be appreciated
thanks, Andrew |

Sounds like you're ahead of the game.
A 914 would be a great starter porsche. You will likely find spending more on a very nice example will cost you less than trying to keep after one that is needed. They are very fun to drive. Just keep in mind, the same thing that make them so quick turning, can make it quick to get into trouble. The 951's (944 turbo's) are also alot of performance for the money. . . but feel comparatively heavy. Better for high speed performance. IMO Also, maintenance on the 951 can be a real chore. Things like the timing belt. Most cars, that need major items replaced at regular intervals, were designed to have reasonable access. . but it is a pain to do on those cars. (mini rant. . since this is "OT rantings" section) ![]() Hopefully some 914 addicts will chime in here and can tell you more about problem spots, and what to avoid. Good Luck!

Well, it looks like your me, a fiew months ago. I just got my first car, 73 914 2.0 + 2 other parts cars, and one that might turn into a racer or just gona sell, for a mesly 950 bucks, guy had to sell fast. I have noticed that people like to sell these things really cheep because they have "better" things to do. im turning 16 in a month so i know where you are, if you are worying about insurance, you pay the same for a 914 for insurance as an 86 honda, exluding the 914-6. And just like you i knew nothing about 914's except that they have 2 trunks are REALLY light and have no power. email me if you need some more q's but i know they are a great porsche for the money and an even better auto cross car. welcome to the list,
and go to the 914 forums for detailed q's. Dave Darling is a living 914 dictionary and there are a ton of other people there. My email and check out my site for pics of my work in project. happy trails. !!!
