Hmm, looks like a new front end for gmail. I'm a nerd, I requested an invite.

I don't really care what this is, but I applaud google for sticking with normal names for their applications/products. 'Inbox' is simple and effective, just like their 'Drive', 'News', "Calendar', 'Maps' etc...

Nothing has been a more annoying peeve of mine lately than to see every new app from every new startup in the valley having to come up with some stupid, stupid name for their app; usually missing a letter (Flickr, Tumblr) or appending some sort of -ster or -ly or -li on the end of the name in some vain attempt to be part of the cool crowd.

I'm not the only person to think this it seems:

I got my invite today or yesterday, can't remember which. To activate Inbox, you have to download the IOS or Android app. The Android app is much more fussy than the regular Gmail app. I think it's designed for the twitter/facebook crowd. I'm not seeing the benefit. It enables you to group your emails and, I think keep certain groups at the top of the page. It may be better on a tablet than a phone. Currently, the only way to use it in a browser is if you use Chrome, but they say more browsers are coming soon.

I'm going to stick it out for a bit. Often, it takes a little time to get comfortable with change. We'll see.

Yeah, I got my invite two days ago....it's....interesting.
It's definitely quite different and, like yourself, I plan to stick it out.
I have found the 'snooze' function for email to be pretty intriguing. For instance, I have a couple of training registration confirmation emails for training I'm taking next year. I don't want to delete or archive the emails, but I don't need them right now. So...I hit the 'snooze' button and set it to an appropriate date and time...when that date and time comes, the email will return to my inbox, but until then, it's not in my way and cluttering things.

That feature sounded useful to me as well, but I haven't had the chance to use it yet. I think there's a pin feature too, that may or may not end up being useful. I think it would be more useful with a larger screen than my phone, like my ipad.

So, it's like "flag for follow-up" in Outlook.

Not that I like MSFT (I hate them) but this feature is pretty much critical in any sort of useful email/calendar application.
