Daughter Got Her First Place...Needs a Spoon
My daughter graduated from college in June. She landed a great first job in marketing and moved into her first place last weekend. I want to buy her a handgun as a gift and get it engraved with something stupid like..."Because I won't always be there to protect you anymore. I love you, Dad".
What do you guys recommend in a small revolver? The S&W 642LS is the obvious choice, but it's so damned ugly...and I hate the DA-only trigger feel. What else is out there that might be better? What about the Ruger? ![]() Yes, she has taken a gun safety course, and grew up around guns.

Is she going to carry it? If not (i.e. it will be a nightstand gun) then I'd get more of a full size pistol or revolver instead of a subcompact or snubnose. Much easier to shoot. Plus a secure way to store it.

Is she going to carry, or will this remain at home?
I had a 642. I gave it to my dad. Fat and heavy, joyless to shoot. The simplicity is admirable, but I just got sick of trying to lug it around. Replaced it with a Sig 938 that I absolutely love. If she's not going to carry, and you want her to have a revolver of some kind, I would go with a larger framed .38 of some flavor. How about a Ruger SP101 in .38? |

If she won't be carrying it I'd look at a 20 ga. pump shotgun, shorter barrel, open choke, regular butt stock.
If she may be carrying it, or she'd just prefer a pistol, I'd look at either a full size 357 revolver or a full size 9mm like the CZ75BD or a clone thereof.

12 gauge. She doesn't have to aim in case she's startled

Going through this exact scenario.
Have her shoot a variety of weapons. There are simply too many variables (can she manage loading a semi-auto, what caliber is she comfortable with, how does the gun look, etc.) for Dad to buy blind. Good luck. We're going to shoot again at Thanksgiving and then decide. |

Or just go classic and get a 1911. This is my then-12 year old daughter shooting one, granted a 1911-22 by GSG but still....

alarm system, pepper spray, a baseball bat and the willingness to use it.
I think guns should be sought out by their owners, not offered up by others.

what does she like? A reasonable small revolver might be a good choice, hard on hands for lots of shooting tho.

Shotgun.
In an interior space that thing will be LOUD. Even if she misses by a mile it will scare the crap out of pretty much anyone or anything. Is she in an Apartment? You don't want her having to worry about backdrops.

The intention is a nightstand gun. She's very rule bound so I doubt she'd carry, but that's up to her.
Of course letting her try different models is the pragmatic direction to take, but that defeats the symbolic gesture of the gift. I want to hand her something wrapped and sentimental (if a gun can serve that purpose). I've always been an over-protective father and its a joke between us. She won't be hitting the range often. She's not the type, so I think making an educated guess choice is OK. She hasn't handled enough handguns to know what she likes or doesn't like. Just for an emergency and my piece of mind.

It its not going to be carried and be a nightstand gun get something larger than the snubby. If you want a revolver, check out the SP101 with the 3" or 4.2" barrel. Its a .357, but will shoot .38spl also. The added weight of the all steel gun will reduce recoil and it will be easier to shoot and practice with.
If you want an auto, tons of choices, Glock, Sig, Ruger, CZ, S&W, SA, etc. |

Also- if this is sentimental value, get something real steel that holds it's value...
1911 compact, a Smith revolver, you know.

Likelihood of her ever needing it are pretty slim but like I said, if she's in any kind of connected housing situation like an apartment it's really not a good idea to go firing off a handgun that you are not proficient with. My 2 cents. YMMV.
