Formula 1 US Grand Prix, Austin
Anybody else going to US Grand Prix? Anybody go last year that can give some insights, lessons learned, etc?
This will be my first trip to Austin. Any restaurant recommendations? Bars for Halloween night? Five couples going from the Porsche Owners Club. Getting ten weekend passes sitting together was easy. Finding lodging...Not so much ![]()

First of all sitting in T15.? Fantastic spot. Secondly if you're a carnivore eat at the Iron Works...best BBQ EVER!. Third Coyote Ugly is OK the first time, after that grab a seat on one of the rooftop bars and enjoy your friends.

Thanks for the Iron Works tip. We're seeking some good BBQ. We'll try it.

Stubbs, stubbs, stubbs. Fantastic BBQ and a great venue. You won't be disappointed.
I really wish I could offer more advice. Your seats are great. I sat there the first year of the GP. Try to sit as high as possible and a few sections left from the corner. This puts you solidly in the braking zone. It's very impressive. Bring a foam pad for your bum. 70 laps on a metal seat can be a pain, literally. Definitely watch the Ferrari Challenge. Rich man bumper cars... it's effing hilarious. ATX is a lot of fun for Halloween. I can't imagine what it's going to be like for the GP on the same weekend. EXPECT a lot of very eccentric people out on 6th street... All in all have a blast, bring lots of money for beer, and take pictures for me since I can't make it. Cheers!

For drinks with a view hit the Oasis overlooking Lake Travis.
Personally I preferred the vibe of the old Oasis before it burned down but still good for some entertainment.

We're actually staying a lot closer to the lake than downtown. We had to rent a house due to the lack of hotel rooms near Austin or the track. $450 for a night in the Holiday Inn??? ![]() Quote:

Whoops! I sat at T12. I do like the complex you are sitting at though. I could see that from T12 and there was lots of action. It was interesting to see the different lines the drivers took through there.
Yep, the seats are assigned on checkout. Just for future reference high up are always the best seats. Hmmm never heard of the printed vouchers. I had actual tickets with assigned seat numbers when I went. If I were you I would call POC for clarification.

At some point, consider getting out of your seats and check out the views from other parts of the track. Not evident on track maps or videos are the elevation changes and vistas that are built into the track which allow you to see the cars from a variety of angles. There are shuttles available that run around the perimeter of the track and can take you to almost any area. Here are some shots from last year's race from the area between Turn 2 and Turn 11, about an hour before the green flag dropped. Notice how close you can get to the track if you walk right up to the fence. The area just past Turn 10 (the picture with the blue trash can in the foreground) is fantastic because you catch the cars as they come over the hill at full song and you can watch them all the way down into the heavy braking area for Turn 11 (the picture just above it). Security was VERY cool and would basically let you stand anywhere you wanted to.

I'll be there, T12 again. If any of you still need tickets, there were a lot still available in the PCA area although they are a bit pricey.
You have to visit 6th street but it doesn't really start hopping until about 10pm.

OK Boys and girls this is a one time limited time offer. If you are a Marshal, you know that we get tickets to the events we work. Well, my ticket for Austin has no owner. If you are interested in attending the USGP in Austin and don't have a ticket let me know. This is a General Admission tick for all three days. Offer ends Friday. First person that answers, the ticket is yours.

^^ Me too, very nice offer Ron. I'm trying to figure out if I can make it there for the race.
Will be wrapping up a trip with my brother across the SW states . He will be driving back thru Austin around then. Let me know if no one steps up for the ticket. Again very nice offer. Boys anyone want to go to the US GP. It's on Ron! Cheers Richard. |
