I can't believe how really good cheap car stereos are

I changed out the head unit in my BMW 318is with a Kenwood head unit I got from Crutchfield. Spent all of $119.00. Around $300 when you include the Rockford Fosgate rear speakers and the Blaupunkt amp. But what amazes me is what I got for $119. First great reception. Probably better than the head unit in any of the other cars we own. Next all the things it comes with: Bluetooth, hands free calling, Pandora, Sirius connection, front USB port and 1/8" plug port. I really am amazed how cheap electronics are today.

I'm with you regarding the cheap car stereo. The only thing unoriginal in my '84 944 is a cheap JVC KDX250BT that I picked up on Amazon for about $80. I wanted to have this mainly for hands-free calling and streaming audio from my phone via Bluetooth. For phone calls, this thing is amazing. During the summer, I was driving somewhere with the roof off when I got a call from work. I had about a 30 minute conversation with the person on the other end. When I spoke with him the following day, he said that he had no idea that I was in the car. The call quality was very good.

Sadly, that cheap head unit and speakers are still probably better than most factory "upgrade" audio systems in brand new cars. It's amazing how crappy most factory systems are.

They may be crappy, but they sure are not cheap. Ever priced one? I needed a new head unit for a customers suburban, and about fell off my chair when I priced a new one from GM..

Same kind of logic that has convinced people that Bose car stereos are quality components.

What's the demand for any of these great units? With today's dashes, it is almost impossible to add a custom stereo.
