Pelican running from the CHP?

CHiPs - S01E01 Scene 1 - YouTube

WPOZZZ 11-03-2014 08:06 PM

Strange, the siren wasn't on while they were on the busy freeway, but on when on empty streets.

Uncle Enzo 11-03-2014 08:11 PM

Ponch never plays by the rules. I love how he dumps his bike and Walker just laughs it off and keeps rolling.

Scooter 11-03-2014 08:21 PM

Who is "Walker"?

I think you mean "Baker", as in Jon Baker.

Arne2 11-03-2014 08:34 PM

You notice the dispatcher on the radio identified it as a "1976 Carrera"? Looks like a '74 to me.

evan9eleven 11-04-2014 02:35 AM

Classic. I see I'm not the only one who dug that show as a kid.

I was surprised, however, that this scene didn't end the usual way most CHiPs chases did-- with the bad guy going over a cliff into the ocean and shots of the car massively exploding from 10 camera angles.

prebordao 11-04-2014 02:48 AM

Glad he got away, haha

GH85Carrera 11-04-2014 05:09 AM

So when are the city streets ever so clear of traffic?

porsche930dude 11-04-2014 05:31 AM

season 1 episode 1 scene 1 thats cool. I saw a targa chace back in the day I think it was on Cops. He stole his bosses car went to go on the highway and spun it around. Took off like hell and left the cop in the dust. He got away but soon after they found him crashed at an intersection. I havnt been able to find the clip

Scuba Steve 11-04-2014 05:36 AM

That show was a huge favorite of mine as a kid. Anything with cool cars, chases or stunts was. I had to watch the A Team, Magnum PI, Dukes of Hazzard and The Fall Guy every week too.

Was that Magnus Walker driving the Targa? Looked familiar somehow.

Cheers Richard

I have first and second season on DVD, it's pretty awesome. You can even buy the seasons on iTunes.

intakexhaust 11-04-2014 06:09 AM

he-he.... I remember those young and dumb days.... ahemmm.... but where we were on the scoots

Nostril Cheese 11-04-2014 06:29 AM

Here it is embedded.

Funny to see a police chase start in Simi Valley, cut to Sylmar, then Canyon Country and suddenly they are Downtown. I spent too many hours sitting in traffic on those freeways.

Think about how much it must have cost to produce this show, every week. I mean the sheer number of cars wrecked..

Then there's Dukes of Hazzard.

A-Team, Dukes, Knight Rider.. All those shows had cool theme songs.

This is damn funky..

KNS 11-04-2014 06:36 AM

^^ They made it from the Valley to downtown in seconds!

I remember all the chase scenes on the show had to be filmed at a maximum of 55 mph (the speed limit at the time) which meant the rest of the traffic had to be going much slower.

Scooter 11-04-2014 07:27 AM

It was convenient that the 118 was under construction during the early days of CHiPs. Freeway shots required no shut down, since parts were not open yet.

Chino 11-04-2014 07:30 AM

If you haven't already seen this, you'll like it, post from a couple years ago.

"CHiPs" is a television show, not a law enforcement agency. ;)

porwolf 11-04-2014 11:49 AM

Not even 100 MPH. Big deal!

I remember those clear fwys around LA in the mid 70s as a little boy. There's was no one on the Glendale fwy and we lived just near the tail end of it. Yeah, they all had names, people in Socal never id them by numbers. somehow it slipped away from us. When I mention the Santa Ana or the Harbor Fwy, people often give me a strange look.

flipper35 11-05-2014 08:01 AM

So why were they going out of their way to split lanes when they clearly had better options?

Nobody ever called the 405 the San Diego Freeway or the 101 the Ventura Freeway.

they called a portion of the 101 the Hollywood fwy.

Those were the days, empty drive it whenever we wanted. I learn how to drive the fwy on the Pasadena Fwy and the Glendale fwy in 1983 on a learned permit with my father. I couldn't hit another car if I tried on a Wednesday afternoon between the hours of 1-4pm.

look 171 11-05-2014 08:19 AM

The best thing about watching Chips or Charlie's Angle for me is seeing LA back in late 70s.

Demonstrates how far we have come. Back in those days my '77 Datsun truck would barely hit 80 mph and that was basically laying everything on the line. Wasn't the speed limit 55 back then?

If it's the clip I am thinking about, it was on Worlds Scariest Police Chases - and I used to have that car. It was a 1972 911T*.

It wasn't mine when it was stolen; I got it as a parts car from the guy it was stolen from. Although the TV show says it was stolen from his boss - the correct story is that the guy I got it from had left it at a shop to be worked on. The mechanic took it out for a spin after doing the repairs, allegedly without the shop owners knowledge or permission. Police chase ensued. The chase ended when the 911 ran into the back end of a minivan.

I have a copy of the clip, but every time I have ever tried to upload it Youtube takes it down for copyright issues.

*The car was jet fokkin black and would do 165 mph with the top off.

Eric 951 11-05-2014 09:33 AM

I remember the episode where the mom from "Growing Pains" had a 924 and was "racing" various people on the freeways as she travelled around--she was of course caught at the end of the episode.

911SauCy 11-05-2014 09:56 AM

WHAT. IS. THE. DEAL. With the less than effort on Porsche engine sound effects!?

Like they were in a production meeting, realized they hadn't captured any sounds so decided the best idea would be someones rotten Datsun 4-cyl exhaust revving in the parking lot.

I am familiar with the program. I was just pointing out that nobody ever referred to a California Highway Patrolman as a chip, or chips if referring to a group of them.

intakexhaust 11-05-2014 10:42 AM

^^^sound dub...LOL. Countless the many TV shows and movies hearing tire on tarmac screeching but the vehicles were in the dirt!

Motorcycle officers never ride side by side either.

If you live in LA you get a smirk out of shows like this. They (ChiPs) ran mostly the 210 (Foothill Freeway after it was closed after the Sylmar Earthquake. Suddenly they are in downtown LA a few seconds later, its about 25 miles away.

Saw the same thing with "Starsky & Hutch where they would drive into a very obvious alley in Van Nuys and come out of the alley in Venice, about 25 miles away.

Just like Hawaii Five-O, the original and the remake.
