Docs, interesting story, what do you think?

My wife has an acquaintance. The acquaintance has been with her husband for 22 years. Everything was wonderful until about 6 years ago. She got home one day and found the husband sitting in a chair shaking and unresponsive. I'm going to call that a seizure; the seizure lasted about an hour. After that the husband snapped out of it, but she says the man has not been the same person since. He's been an *******, had problems with drinking too much, stopped working and hasn't worked since. He's caused a couple of kitchen fires that he couldn't deal with because he was too drunk.

So to my ears, it sounds like he had a seizure and now has some sort of brain damage to some part of the brain. I've heard of similar personality changes in folks with head injuries.

So, based on the very limited info that you've got, assuming that there was no traumatic impact to the head (we haven't heard of any), what are your thoughts?

This is just an acquaintance, we haven't seen or met the husband and don't really know any more about it.

Seizure, stroke, something not good. He needs a good neuro guy, and needs to give up his car keys until someone gives them the lowdown.

Not a doc but had a similar experience with my wife's family. Her Grandmother suffered a stroke and it changed her. She was always plucky but she could now be downright mean.

I hope your friend can get help.

I had a close friend who was pistol-whipped (whacked hard on the head). From then on he had a drinking problem and was sometimes mean ..

I had a neighbor who had a stroke. She went crazy and told her landscaper to cut down all my trees. That thing between your ears? Important stuff in there.

They need immediate help... The damage is already done - six years - it's time to deal with it hoping that noone gets really hurt in the process.

This. Sounds suspiciously like the guy tried to stop drinking or ran out and has been going further and further down the drain since. He may have been a closet drinker long before the day it came to the surface. Sad but not uncommon. YMMV.
