Its like opening a Time capsule

Its time to recover the wings on the plane I built 27 years ago, its so cool to uncover the whole wing and look at all the work I did back before I was married, had kids, etc. Its amazing at how well everything looks, the only thing that changed was that the wood got darker over the years.

You have to be of a certain age before feelings of nostalgia kick in. You aren't of a certain age, are you?
It is such a delicate framework. What a miracle it is that all those little wood and fabric pieces combined in the right way can lift a man off the earth.

targa911S 11-18-2014 04:05 PM

damn that's cool!

Jim Richards 11-18-2014 04:07 PM

That looks mighty nice, Craig.

speeder 11-18-2014 04:28 PM

Yes, it does. :)

gshase 11-18-2014 04:33 PM

Craig...This post is lacking. Are you going back with Poly Fiber? And please post some pics before you tore it down. P.S. My wife lives rib stitching and she would love to be snowed in till May.

Whoa there! Inquiring minds want to know. . . covered in cotton or linen as original with rib stitching? Or modern synthetic? How was it attached to the ribs?

This is extremely cool Craig thanks for sharing it.

For the curious: FAA handbook on fabric covering

Looks good, Craig.
What kind of time frame are you allotting to re-cover?
Will it be back in the air for spring?

Nostril Cheese 11-18-2014 06:29 PM

Wow. Thats damn impressive. Got any pics of the whole plane?

cgarr 11-18-2014 06:32 PM

It should be ready in the spring. Going with the same poly fiber system 2.7 fabric. We are doing some mods, the orginal only had alerions on the lower wing, we are cutting then down and adding alerions to the top wing too, this should make it a lot more responsive and less heavy on the controls.

Man I wish I had the time and space to build something like that.

Respect.

nynor 11-18-2014 06:52 PM

is that a vickers? :)

herr_oberst 11-18-2014 06:53 PM

It's about time you decided to finish that damn thing!

Very cool!

wildthing 11-18-2014 06:56 PM

The airfoil is an amazing phenomenon.

Wow, you built the entire airplane? How long does something like that take? Was it from scratch or a kit?

Boy is that cool! When I was a kid and Wright-Patterson AFB was a SAC base we used to lay at the end of the runway when the B-52s took off. They would take off a bunch at a time (I don't remember how many - 12?) They smoked a LOT more in those days.

304065 11-19-2014 04:44 AM

The B52 flies not due to its airfoil but because it frightens the Earth away.
