My attitude is if they are providing employment there's no need to give the Gumbit any more tax than they legally have to. What saddens me is seeing good hard working people in their own business slowly going broke because everybody including the tax man has their hand out. We used to support local business. .... Now they're going broke because people are buying online tax free from an Ebay store based in Asia. |
CASH is king.
I never go on trips without enough to pay my way back home. I have had my CC blocked due to spending patterns the bank didn't like (fraud). Good luck getting that fixed in the boonies. Or at the airport 10 minutes before take off, when you try to pay for added luggage fees. Also, does that local guy take CC who can pull you out of the ditch 30 miles from the next paved road? My local purchases are 90% in cash. Restaurants like my cash, and even more so do the servers like my cash tips. When I buy something from a local small business, I always pay cash and negotiate. I always get 5% off, be it a bicycle, auto repair or small appliance. The majority of this CASH is king is NOT because of tax evasion but because of evading the credit card fees and the "ifcome" - you never know if the money will arrive or not, in an electronic purchase. In a cash transaction - the deal is done the minute I leave the store ... That's my two cents (in CASH) G |
I ordered out from a cash only pizza joint this past weekend, seriously rubbed the wife and I the wrong way.
No debit, no credit, no checks...just cash. Oh, you want pizza, good because that's all you get. They don't sell soda, water, salad, appetizers or deserts, just pizza and there are only 8 toppings to choose from...but strangely they are making so much pizza they can't keep up with 32 employees. When I went in I counted 24 ovens, that can cook up to 3 pies at once or within 20 minutes, 216 pies per hour. We paid $24 for a medium, so say a conservative $4300/hr. Girl at the counter said they are crazy busy thur-sun at least 5-6hrs per night It would be interesting to see their books. Pizza was mediocre at best. |
I think cash-only is kind of common among "great" pizza joints. I've been to many in NJ that are cash-only. They say the cc merchant fees are just too high. They all seem pretty busy and the pizza is fantastic. So why would they bother with credit cards? One I went to in a bad section in Newark, NJ in Sept. had no bathroom and also sold nothing but pizza and a few drinks in the fridge, no soda fountain. But they were busy and the piza was great. Plenty of the great cheesesteak places in Philly also take no credit cards and are busy almost 24/7. I couldn't care less about their books. If the food is great and prices reasonable, I'm going.

There is a local place that is famous for not taking credit cards and not taking reservations. When he was campaigning in the area in 1992, GHW Bush was taken there. They wouldn't give the SS guys reservations - they had to wait for a table for the President. And of course they had to pay cash.

Is it just me or do the cash guys notice that no one can make change!
Some places it would be quicker to use plastic, due to their inability to count. I sometimes get a 'discount' just because people can't make change. |

He told my friend that they make more $$ from pizza joints than anything else, including sports book, loan sharking, extortion, you name it. Who knew. |

To further rant, being in the Midwest drives me crazy. It's like no one knows how to run a business compared to here. From stupid coffee houses and restaurants to some clown who charges double for window tint compared to my guy here, (and probably does 1-2 cars a day compared to the place here that does 25-30 with 6 full time employees). Just dumbfuchery everywhere you turn. Whew...I feel better now. :) Here is what a coin car wash control looks like here, plus they have 4 change machines and it's $2.00 on M-F: http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1416857031.jpg |

Nothing's worse than a cash only business with no ATM.

And you are correct, housing prices here are not very logical. Furthermore, I'm no business genius myself, (not even close), but I'm surrounded by some pretty good ones here. I think that in bigger cities or population centers, free-market capitalism gets magnified by the scale of things like the size of the markets, competition, etc. There is definitely something to be said for the slower pace of life in smaller places, it's just not for me. Once again, very sorry. You are one of my favorite posters and a cool guy, IMO. |
