My employees have Thanksgiving & Christmas off...with pay.
A lot of businesses pride themselves being open on Thanksgiving & Christmas Day, yet you most likely won't see the owners of these companies in the trenches with their troops.
My theory is if a business needs to remain open 24/7/365 days, then their business model is either broke or driven by unadulterated greed. Chic-fil-A for instance closes at 10:30 PM, and is closed on Sundays, yet still makes money hand over fist. In hindsight, Scrooge was a VERY generous person...he actually gave his employee's SOMETHING at the end of the year in recognition for their hard work. Thank God, I dumped corporate America...

We gave ours the days after both off (with pay of course) as well.
Agree on the dumping corp America feeling.

Interesting as one of my tech guys, newer guy, asked if we had Friday off this week.
Our Office Manager says, yes we have always the 14 years I've been here. D-Bag owner chimes in and says, "In my corporate experience almost all businesses are open Friday, we'll need you to cover." (db owner has taken 6 full weeks of vacation and spent 18 business days golfing in 2014) Bless you guys with a soul!

Where I work we get 6 paid holidays a year. New Years Day (not sure why that one's a holiday), Memorial Day, July 4th, Labor Day, Thanksgiving & Christmas. To me, those are the only real holidays. This is the airfreight trucking industry and these days are basically dictated by our customers. That said, I'll probably not come in Friday.

The one retail place I worked in during college was one that opened early for Black Friday. They got panned in the news, how sad for the workers, etc.
Not one single person worked that day that didn't ask to, in fact there was usually a waiting list. They were paid 2x their hourly wage (1x holiday, 1x regular)... the news always seems to forget to mention that side of the story.

Chic-fil-a has a great business plan. You can't be great to everyone, but you can be to a few. Every store I've been to has great employee's, nobody that does not understand you, and great food. Usually I see the owner on hand also.

I'm flying on Thanksgiving. I sure hope those folks from the airline and ATC come to work that day.

I'm employed by the Federal government; I'll be working Friday. I'll also be working the Friday after Christmas. I actually like working these days because pretty much nobody else does, so I can get a lot done.
My wife's a manager of a retail store. They're opening at 6pm on Thanksgiving to "get a headstart" on Black Friday. My oldest stepson (Junior in high school) just got a part-time gig at Kmart, so he'll be working Thanksgiving night, too. The plus side for my wife is she'll get some seriously fat bonuses in the next 3 months if her store beats last year's sales each month (this month, she's 22% over currently), so that offsets the aggravation of working the holiday. I asked if her employees are getting double time or time and a half for working the holiday...she looked at me like I was crazy.

These are the paid holidays I get this year, in addition to 5 weeks vacay and unlimited sick (which I never use). I love corporate America!
New Years, Wed., 1/01/14 President's Day, Mon., 2/17/14 Memorial Day, Mon., 5/26/14 Independence Day, Thurs., 7/03/14 Labor Day, Mon., 9/01/14 Columbus Day, Mon., 10/13/14 Thanksgiving Day, Thurs., 11/27/14 Christmas Day, Thurs., 12/25/14 (I already get Fridays off) |

Neither job paid me double time. Both attempted to circumvent labor laws and not pay time and a half for all time over 8hrs in a 24hr span. I will work at my current job on Friday, regular working hours, and have no problem with it. If I really did have a problem with it, I could take vacation time. However, that's not the case for the HS and College students working on a National Holiday or going to bed at 5pm to be at work at 2am the day after one. |

Almost Every place I have ever worked gave Thursday and Friday off paid, and depending on when Christmas fell, two days off then too. If Christmas fell on a Tuesday or Thursday you got Monday or Friday off with it. I guess they thought it was cheaper to pay you for the day because they didn't expect much from you at work. Or maybe they were just nice people.

Good deal. Take care of the employees. certain types of jobs just don't have the luxury, but I think 75-85% of the folks that have to work on Thanksgiving and Christmas have to work due to the greed of the person calling the shots.
I have to work, but then I'm in a role that supports business that runs 24x7x365. At least we get paid pretty well for holidays that we have to work (2.5x) and we do staff down a bit for the big holidays as well as working a slightly shorter shift (but getting paid as if we were working our full shift). What I give up for having to work the occasional holiday is that I'm NEVER on call (unusual for my line of business) and I work 4 days a week with 4 weeks of vacation on top of personal time, sick time, holidays (that can be used as floaters). All in all, I only work about 6 months out of every 12.

My employees are my most valuable asset. I give them pretty much whatever they want, and they take good care of me. I have worked on the Fourth of July, Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year's Eve and Day. I have never had an employee work any of those days, ever.
Actually, not true, now that I think of it. We work New Year's Eve until noon.

Funny thing....I check in with my guys maybe once a week. I have no idea if they are going to do anything on a holiday or for that matter anytime! I am one of the most hands off bosses. They call when they need me to break down a wall or help with a strategy. Once a month we talk about what targets to capture. When they don't close they call me I don't have to call them. Sometimes I get what I think is a lame excuse but I never give them shyt about it, I offer to try a different tack. Sometimes I can close them other times its legit.
Ya, not big into the corps scape anymore. I shall do my own thing someday again and stay that way...
