I am retired now, but always worked 12 hour days 6-7 days a week when I was working. If you enjoy what you do it is not really work, but still the family suffers. Tough to keep a balance.

Nominally 40/week. Sometimes more. For example this Friday is a Company holiday after Turkey Day. I fly at 10:00 PM from Los Angeles to Auckland and arrive there on Sunday morning. I have a five day Tech Scout for a film that will be from 7AM to about 8 or 9 PM every day. I'll have the next weekend off when I fly from Wellington to Brisbane, AU, then a normalish work week in Brisbane and fly home on the next Friday and get back to LA on Friday morning. No OT, I'm salaried.

Is spending a weekend in Brisbane "work?" Not really. But I'll be away from my wife and doing stuff around the house for two weeks, with no additional compensation.

This, though I'm technically in academia. I am maxed out on my vacation days (we don't have severance so that is an emergency backup) and have been running uptempo since 2009. Two weeks ago I actually went 24 hours without checking work email. Easily the first time in 5+ years I've gone that long.

Something's gotta change as I'm fried. I'm going to try and go off-grid for 3 weeks starting 12Dec. Luckily the govt and university pretty much shut down at the end of the year, so i'm going to extend that and remove my work email account from my phone and computers. Balance is all outta whack...

My first job was managing a restaurant, typically six ten-hour days a week, plus getting called in for emergencies. My second was in banking and hours were much more civilized - 40/week, 4 weeks vacation, off for every federal holiday. The only OT was when system problems made us stay late. The current job is sort of a blend of the two - four ten-hour days a week, no staying late but the occasional extra day required.
