We said goodbye to Rex yesterday...

We knew the day was coming when we'd have to say goodbye to Rex, our Sheppard mix that was a pound rescue 15 years ago. Over the past year or so, but more-so lately, his hips were causing him discomfort and we expected he wouldn't make it through the winter as the colder weather definitely made it worse.

Additionally Rex had been exhibiting a loss of appetite - periodically he just didn't seem to want to eat anything. He had lost 7 lbs since his previous Vet visit when my wife took him in last week to have the Vet look at him. Over the past 2 days he hadn't eaten anything - even special treats like bacon. Yesterday his hips were shaking and he was barely able to walk across the wood floor. My wife and I talked and decided that it was too much to watch him suffer further. She called the Vet and made an appointment - we said our goodbyes and his suffering came to an end. We had him from December '99 to November 28 ' 14 - supposedly he was about 6 weeks old at the pound, so he made it the equivalent of 105 years.

RIP Rex.
Sucks putting down a long time companion. I'm sure he had a great life with a loving family.

God bless you for making the right decision for Rex. It's not about us. It's about them. They bring so much joy into our lives. Keep your chin up. I know it really sucks right now.
I just had to make the same decision for our 18 year old pug, Brutus. Very sad day!
God speed Rex!

Very sad.....he looks like a sweetheart.

I'm so sorry Mark....but take some solace in knowing you gave him a great life, he knew he was loved, and most importantly he is now out of pain.

I know the day will come for us - I can't imagine how painful it will be.

Huge respect for you and again my condolences on your loss.

Sorry to hear this sad news.

As a rescue pup you saved him and i'm certain he had a great home for 15 years. A sad ending to a wonderful story.

It's a terrible decision to have to make but you did the right thing having gone through this just a month ago. Perhaps Rex and Widgeon will be friends on the other side.

It's amazing the bond between a man/woman and their dog. Apart from the family, which dogs are a very big part, I think the bond developed between owners and their dogs is probably one of the stongest. They are truly one of natures most beautiful creatures.
I am my dogs custodian and no amount of trouble or money would I not do/spend to make her right. They have one life just like us, and that life rests in our hands. My dogs life is just as important to her (and me), as mine is to me.
Your dog clearly came into a loving home. There is another dog out there for you whose life needs someone like you in it. Don't take to long to rescue another, you'll do your old friend proud. Sorry for your loss.

Thanks for all of your kind words. Yesterday was a rather sad day with quite a few tears from everyone.

A few months back I had seen on a web site a storyboard drawn that I had meant to save. It's taken me more than an hour, but I finally found it. This storyboard captures the day wonderfully. Anyone that loves dogs and has gone through this will surely relate.

Sorry for your loss the family pet is a tough one to lose. I'm sure you gave him a great home and in return you received a loving loyal companion. You ended the suffering which was the greatest gift you could have given. Remember the good times I'm sure there were many. And when you are ready go rescue another one.

I am very sorry for your loss, Mark.
Pretty sure those fuzzy little critters know how much we care for them.
15 years is a good, long life.
