yesterday, i offended an old man with free coffee.

hahah..what a scene.

i wanted a cup of coffee. my wife wanted to check out a store. i figure, buy a small cup,sit and wait, she takes her time..no pressure.

there was one single open seat at a table. some old guy. mis-matched clothing, old beat up cane..he had a table to himself.. just sitting there looking melancholy.

so. i figured i buy him a cup of coffee, plant myself at the same table and just say hi.

i hand him a cup, and ask if i could sit down. he gives me a look and states loudly, "you got it wrong! i am not a bum!"

opps. i assure him i didnt even think about that, and just wanted to sit down and while i was there, i could offer him a cup. he went on and on and on. the rest of the coffee shop was about to put me on youtube.. under: Asian guy, social profiling gone wrong.

i gave up, wished him a great day. he chases me down, and says, "sorry..thanks for the coffee. i didnt mean to go off. it's just the holiday season when i feel the the most lonely"

my wife comes out and asked me what that was about. hahah.. i told her just some lonely guy yelling at me. she said, "ahh..you should have bought him a cup of coffee and just sat with him"

yea., next time.

Vash, at least he realized his mistake and apologized in the end. Sign of a good man besides the first response.

Sometimes reminding people why they are down is a real downer for them.

You are a good guy Clif and I bet your gesture helped in some way to brighten the guys day.

My old grandfather was an artist and a DIYer. So when he got up in the morning he put his worn out old tweed pants and faded old shirt on - every day, he just did. Some days he would go into town to put a bet on the horses or buy some art supplies.

More often than not people would stop him and offer him money or to buy him a meal. What kind decent people!!! He loved it and thought it was really funny as he was a upper middle class kind of guy with loads of money.

Good on Vash

I feel your pain.
I've offended plenty of people with my coffee.
I tend to like it a little bit strong...

Biatches you out for a friendly gesture, then complains he's lonely. There's some irony for you.

This, and good for you being a sensitive enough man to see that the guy needed just what you tried to give him, even if his initial response was not great, but not that unusual.

Talking to one of my new patients...nice guy.....5 year old t-shirt, 10 year old jeans (so it seemed)......he was down because the company he worked for had new management, and his job was no longer secure..he thought he'd have to retire early,..... "Didn't know what he'd do". I said to him "So, if that happened, are you going to be OK? You know, with the bills?"
He said "Sure, I made $9 million when we sold the company"

Book....cover.....judging.......................

Vash, don't give up, keep being yourself. I was out one evening not long ago. I'd been having a rough day with bad muscle spasms and muscle spasticity. I'm in the habit of pushing myself on bad days (for good or ill). Well I was in the local mall wobbling my way up some stairs when a young fella asked if he could offer me a hand. I DON'T like being babied but his kindness overcame my curmudgeonly attitude. It was all good.

Keep being thoughtful Vash.
