Porsche/Nardi ashtray

Picked this up at a yard sale today, first one I have seen.

Does anyone have any knowledge of these things? I thought it was kind of cool. Thought it was worth the ten bucks I gave for it.

I like the way this is beginning to sound - any idea what these things are worth?

There's a signature on the back - I'll spend some time tomorrow and see what I can find. I'll have to try to decipher what that name is.

Not sure if that sig is from the artists "house" (Keramos of Ghigo) or is genuine (most likely not as that ashtray has to be mass-produced), but apparently, Camille Ghigo aka "Mastro Ghigo" is a "listed" artist. Nonetheless, I'd say that piece is worth well more than the purchase price (pardon the poor translation from an Italian website...oops...it appears Google translations do not copy/paste well...gotta read between the lines):

Rediscovering
delle botteghe artigiane of the artisan
in Piemonte Piedmont
Mastro Ghigo il ceramista Ghigo the master potter

The memory of an artist with his own hands he managed to create little "big" works is the opportunity to reveal a trade among the finest and a man, Camille Ghigo nicknamed "Mastro Ghigo" precisely that with its hand molded ceramic angels and Madonnas, one different from that ended up hanging on the beds of children in much of the world, from Venezuela to Canada, to name some countries. But the activity of "Mastro Ghigo" does not stop but to a number of sacred space in a wide range of ceramic articles, from pitchers to vases, dishes animals, compositions such as cribs and games of chess, to statues and the dancers: true hand-crafted jewelry of a job today ... almost impassable.

Camille Ghigo, said Mastro Ghigo (honorific title medieval fully appropriate) was born in Turin and from an early age he realized that you have a natural tendency to enjoy beautiful things. This prompts him to attend school for painting and Reffo sculpture capable of delivering a decisive role in bringing his character then to attend the Art Academy Albertina. Among his first experience there is cooperation (1934 to 1946) with the famous company that the creation of the famous Lenci dolls are followed by a large production of ceramics. At the end of World War II opened a shop in one of the most popular city, the Borgo San Paolo. A store of art placed in a corner of a yard, almost overwhelmed by workshops for the repair of motorcycles and cars and shops with accessories and spare parts, in which Camille Ghigo strives to invent, but could we tell create his masterpieces. Works of their kind that are real jewels of perfection, because it is the pursuit of perfection, the main source of his inspirations, with a treatment of the ceramics so refined and enchanted by surprise, leaving the impression on all who draw near to one of its work to have his hands something alive and real. Each piece is treated to the finest detail in a harmonious simplicity of phrasing, almost musical, with sets of combinations of shades and colors where the fantastic shapes are not in contradiction with those strictly geometrical . A summary of work at a solo artist in the town of Avigliana of 1971, did write to Cesare Mussini: "I think I own that this naivete, in his way Pascoli and Franciscan together, the note is more beautiful and true artistic production and the testimony of Master Ghigo. "To commemorate the seventy-fifth birthday of Lenci Dolls in 1995 was an exhibition at the gallery Berman of Turin titled" The children in the world of Lenci, take the dolls from the faces of Miss born back in 1919 and later became famous (and expensive!) throughout Europe. Among the works on display were also some very popular pottery created by "Master Ghigo," including the highly successful "Pirate rat" and a "dancer" who had a particular success. But Camille Ghigo is also known as an excellent painter, although he preferred to focus its activities mainly on ceramics. To the question "Why did not the artist ..." gives the same answer "Mastro Ghigo" during the presentation of works of painting and drawing in the exhibition held in 1975 at the Youth Center Avigliano. Let us conclude this brief portrait of the artist with her comment that looks like a will but serene and almost a prophetic farewell to earthly life, but to perpetuate its identity as a man and his works remain an artist (ceramics, paintings, drawings ), signs of an absolute, beyond time and new conceptions of art that will be: "... Now that my human adventure is about to end with a positive balance of family affection, I regret nothing, because I think I behaved honestly towards art that keeps the flame burning inside me that, at sunset, in this corner of peace, light a few days of my program, perhaps also why I did the painter. "

I bet you could get at least $200 on eBay for that. But I wouldn't sell for anything.

Definite Score!

I picked up a Nardi Wood Wheel just like that at the local wrecking yard for $13 and it's gorgeous - someday to go in my 914.

Thanks for the information and the link to the Pullman Gallery; I looked at that this morning. Did you see the price information on that piece? Holy s**t - a thousand pounds! I've sent them an inquiry with photographs of mine - I notice that the one in the gallery has Nardi rather than Porsche on the horn button. I've asked what a reasonable value might be, and if they have any awareness of the numbers in which these were produced.

I'll keep you all posted if I hear from them.

Are there any good Porsche collectable/memorabilia/automobilia people in the States that might give me some information?

Frankly, I'm stunned.

Hmmm,

Guess I'm not quite up on this one as much as I thought.

I've seen these made by Beswick out of the UK, not out of Italy. Here's a link to one of them on UK ebay. They were made with almost every manufacturer's horn button on them.

Pricing I've seen varies, but it's within line of what the ebay auctions went off at. Unless the Italian one is a special make?
