M Logo Whats your price per mile on your DD or Porsche?

I was about to sit down and figure out how much I have spent mile per mile on my 1996 BMW M3 Looking for all the records. I bought it for $15,000 (I think) many years back and have driven it only 50,000 miles. It's is the closest thing I have to a daily driver (but I only drive a car about once a week, make sense?) So w/o figuring fluids, new radiator, sport muffler and Zimmerman rotors etc etc. $3.33 is quite a bit more money than I thought. When I figure in maint. and insurance etc. I will post it here. Or maybe I won't even open this can of worms!

This is and exercise with no reward.

If knew the real cost of every thing I like, I probably wouldn't enjoy them nearly as much.

A 1996 M3 is still worth a fair amount. Your cost per mile will not be known until you sell the car someday, and deduct the sale price from the 15k purchase.

Does resale value factor into your equations in any way? Or just the straight cost out-of-pocket to keep the car running? FWIW, I saved a fair chunk by switching to a collector car policy on the 911. My insurance went from $1600/yr to $300/yr. Are you sure you want to figure out the answer to your question?

930 was bought new by my family in 84 for around 60-70k, Ive probably spent 20k in upkeep and 30k keeping it insured and registered for 30 years. It has 30k miles on it now about half between my dad and half for me.

I think we are sitting in the 4$ per mile category. Probably about $7-8 if you include the time value of money. Ironically I think gas is negligible in the calcs.

My daily is a subaru wrx which I bought used for 17k and put 70k miles on it + its original 35k.

I figure 1k per year upkeep + 1k per year insurance an reg + 2.5k gas

for 5 years the cost to date is around 40k which is around $.57 per mile which seems pretty high actually. My assumptions were a bit high I think and ive ignored the residual values, which would probably make the 930 "free"

It's like asking what MPG I get. Yeah I can get 25-27 mpg if I drive it nicely. But I don't...I drive it hard and don't care what I pay in gas! It's a fun expense.

I would rather think how much enjoyment I get per mile...

It's a lot. Except for every day this week it's been in the shop.

Same for the motorcycle. Even with the close calls on the way to work, I still show up in a great mood because I got my morning ride.

Your $ amount is 30 cents/mile.
Looking at it another way you're getting 3.33 miles per initial dollar spent, not including upkeep.
Hopefully this will make you feel better!

Matt

Operating costs are a combination of scheduled and unscheduled downtime - upgrades are optional but not required so I wouldn't include them. Layout what you pay for annually on the routine stuff as well as fuel and divide by miles. The other costs should be in another basket

Other costs being the non-essential upgrades and back dates and what have you.

This is a number I will never take the time to figure out in the spirit of not driving myself to sell the cars.

9 months ago I counted my Porsche receipts from the last 4 years, that hurt enough...

This is a valuable exercise for a DD, assuming you have a DD just for practical purposes (putting miles on it). Mileage isn't a good metric for evaluating a car you have for fun.

$0.036 per mile in my Volt.

Over 10X that with the Turbo, but 20X the pleasure...
