Well, its been fun but...

time to call it quits.

After a 30 year career at Verizon, at midnight tonight, I am officially RETIRED! :) Started out at 19 yrs old when it was NY Telephone. Then became NYNEX, then Bell Atlantic, and finally Verizon. Its pretty surreal. Still cant believe it. I couldn't wait to leave. I thought it would have been real easy. But honestly it was extremely tough this afternoon, leaving what was basically my second home for all these years. Packing up and closing my office door for that last time really got to me.
Gonna miss the people I worked with. Many who have become very close friends.
My boss, who has done more for me over the years, than anyone I know will be missed the most. He was a godsend.
On the bright side, no more sucky commute sitting in traffic, no more gas and bridge tolls. Time to move on to better things.

Well done Vinny. You survived it all :D Now go out and get really drunk.

onewhippedpuppy 12-18-2014 07:54 PM

I thought you were a fire fighter?

Regardless, congrats! On to better things.

Rick Lee 12-18-2014 07:56 PM

Congrats. I was at Verizon for only six mos. and had no problem walking out the door. Actually, they walked me out when I tried to give notice.

Joeaksa just hooked me up with a great new job and my last day is next Tues. The team is taking me to happy hour tomorrow after work. I've only been there for 16 mos., but this is the best crew I've ever worked with and I'll miss them.

Retired at 50? Nice!

OWP: He is a firefighter on the interweb! I thought you were a car salesman - wait ... :D

Way to make it to the finish line Vinny! You seem like a busy guy, you'll fill in the space. Maybe time to dive into the offshore scene a little more?

North East.

Volunteer FD's are the norm.

Every bit as competent, professional, and often times better equiped than the paid pros.

LakeCleElum 12-18-2014 08:49 PM

Vinster: Congrats and enjoy.......Verizon might be a great place to work.......Coverage here is good.........Customer service........Below zero......I have complaint with the State Attorney General Office for them charging me data usage when my device was not even plugged in (Jet Pak).......Glad you got out when you did......

ZOA NOM 12-18-2014 08:58 PM

Scared me, thought you were leaving US! I would expect the post count to climb through the roof now.

Congrats, enjoy life!

Cheers, Guy.

ckelly78z 12-19-2014 04:28 AM

Wow, retiring at 50 sounds great, i'm your same age and have another 9-10 years before I can go.

What are your plans after sitting around for a couple months no commuting ?

Porsche-O-Phile 12-19-2014 04:45 AM

pete3799 12-19-2014 05:04 AM

Congrats vinny.
The tittle of this thread had me worried......Glad you're leaving them and not us.
Enjoy your retirement.

Seahawk 12-19-2014 05:13 AM

Terrific news, Vinny.

After a well deserved break, any specific plans?

5String43 12-19-2014 06:04 AM

Congratulations! I've been retired for 13 months now. It is the best, the goal we all work so hard to finally achieve. Make the most of it.

livi 12-19-2014 06:16 AM

Congratulations Vinny!

Now you can dedicate your well earned free time to posting those fabulously fit women on the "chest" and "legs and butt" threads.

congrats!!! what's next ? road trip ??

rammstein 12-19-2014 07:29 AM

I wonder if you knew my Uncle, who also retired a few years ago? He started at NY Telephone too, and went through the same gamut. Last name Bonfiglio. Did you work with him?

mikesride 12-19-2014 11:12 AM

Wow.....I don't ever see myself retired. Hopefully I can die from some horrific industrial accident at work and my wife will be able to find a young pool boy and relax!!!!!!;)

But congrats to you sir!!!!!

VINMAN 12-19-2014 11:14 AM

Big thanks to everyone. I'm still trying to absorb the fact that its real. One of the first things I did last night before I went to bed was delete my 5:15 alarm from my clock. Not that it mattered, because one of my dogs woke me up at that time anyway out of habit. Unfortunately he don't have a snooze button!
Have a lot of thoughts going through my head. Semi- panicking, did I do the right thing?, now what happens? Etc, etc... I guess that's normal. My partner retired 2 years ago, she said she felt exactly the same, but it quickly wore off after a few days.
I know I'm still young and its a big move to give up a job like I had, but I'm tired of it. Cant deal with the commute anymore, its getting worse and worse. But mainly, I see the way the company is headed and it doesn't look good. So I wanted to get out now while I still have everything going good. There wasn't one person I work with that didn't say I made the right move.

For now just gonna take some time to myself. after a month or two I'll get myself into gear . I still have to work, so its not a true retirement per se. I still have my part time fire instructor gig, teaching technical rescue, which pays very well. Plus I already have a few perspective offers in the fire related field. Primarily going to try to get my home improvement business into high gear . I really want the ability to be my own schedule maker.

As far as post count going up, it will probably go down, since most of my posting was at work. :p

Rammstien , cant recall anyone by that name.

sugarwood 12-19-2014 03:07 PM

I have seen others driven to their retirement by the commute.
How long was your commute?

dan88911 12-19-2014 04:33 PM

Congrats, Vinman
I did the same 3 yrs. ago.
