I wonder if that would help driving the Miata.

I am thinking hunter orange hash stripes on the fenders.

Executive summary: This project documents the fact that a bright-coloured bicycle jacket significantly reduces cyclists’ accident risk.

Nicely done study. Amazing they could find so many to sign up. Of course we would all guess bright colors help, but it is nice to see confirmation and the magnitude.

What I find scary (and confirmation for why I avoid public roads) is the 2% chance to be in an injury accident (per annum!) that this study reports.

I do have bright bike clothes nevertheless, even for the mountain.

I've lost count of the number of fricking idiots dressed in all black, at night, I've almost hit.
Bikes, skateboarders and pedestrians.

Only 0.5%/yr rate for multi party injury accidents.

Fwiw: the increase in safety varies, according to the background colour.
Always ride against a black background, if possible. : )

I don't see that. Even in the jacket group.

Total multi party accidents
Jacket group all / personal injury 124 / 43
Control all / personal injury 221 / 83
Total all / personal injury 345 / 126

Jacket group 3402
Control group 3391
Total 6793

126 personal injury accidents out of 6793 total participants = 1.85%
43 personal injury accidents out of 3402 jacket riders = 1.26%

And those total participant numbers do not include the people that dropped off the radar or never filled out a report.

Cheers,

G

You're right. Still, that means on average one injury accident per 70 years or so, which seems unremarkable. Since the distribution of injury severity is probably broad.

Looks like abut 1/4 of the injury accidents end up in the emergency room. So, if you ride 35 years you have a 15% chance of going to the hospital. Not insignificant IMHO, but definitely a risk that's bearable and can be further reduced with conservative / careful behavior and clothing!

I always wear bright colors and the big one, at least in my mind is that I wear a bright helmet as well, so I can "Bob" it around when there are tall vehicles blocking normal sight lines, like near intersections.
