got a 50in plasma tv for $40
actually the TV was FREE, the capacitor was $40.
my daughter and her boyfriend picked up this TV when the guy was thowing it away. he said it just needed a part. short story: it only needed one capacitor but i bought several others as they looked like they may need replacing soon. the TV is a philps 50in pixel plus 3 HD. its a 2009 model. i think it was around $2500-$3500 back then.

You need to do a Tim Allen chest pound! But why was the capacitor $40? Kind of related, but a few years ago we had a Phillips brand (yes again) DVD player that just quit. Of course, DVD players are near obsolete and could have just purchased a nice BluRay player for pittance but I wanted to know what culprit fried out. I simply typed in a search engine the Philips model number and issue, sure enough my solution was answered. The instructions of repair (including how to solder...LOL), identified the specific capacitor (cost 70 cents from Radio Shack), 30 minutes of tinker time was all it needed.

Not sure if this is common problem with all plasma TVs but my son's Samsung plasma TV when kaputt on him a few years ago. Without anyone else's help, he spent a few hours on the net and found that this particular model was known for blowing capacitors on the power supply board. He bought a capacitor at Radio Shack and replaced it himself. The amazing part of this story is the fact that he's about as technically competent as Kim Kardashian so I was proud of him for taking care of the problem instead of calling me for $$$.
I need a 50" for my garage and would be more than happy to give you $50 for the TV!

i ordered about 6 caps. i was going to replace some of the others too. 3 were big ones.

as an electronics tech looking is actually more usefull or important than test EQ and electronic knowledge.
swollen or leaking caps, as in my problem. burnt components. but then why did it burn up. when things burn up its usually due to hi current. solder joints is a very big one. especially on cars. somebody gave me a big tube TV years ago. the sodler joint on the input was bad. same thing on my power amp for my home stereo. great amp for the price but it started cutting out. bad solder joint onthe speaker terminals. its just a matter of knowing how to spot the bad joints.
