My dad... Duct tape and bailing wire.

My dad's a piece of work. He's 83 years old. Served in the Marine Corps at age 16. Oakland cop for 26 years. Has his class-A California contractors license. He never graduated high school but he's smart and the hardest working man I ever met.

He's had a rough life and he never had much, so I try to give him some nice things. Problem is, he's from Oklahoma. Depression era, dust bowl Oklahoma. My wife will buy him nice clothes and he'll show up a week later proudly wearing his new duds...splattered with mortar and paint. He has plenty of money, but his pickup looks like Fred Sanford's.

Here's the latest. I bought him a nice Garmin GPS. He loves the thing but he lost the suction cup windshield mount. I told him I'd get him a new one but he said he rigged up something that was working just fine.

Here's a pic of my dad's GPS unit mounted nicely in the cup holder on the dash of his pick up.

Seriously, what part of Oklahoma? My Dad was born in Spearman Tx, but Grew up just south of Oklahoma city in Tuttle. He went to Panhandle A&M then OK A&M (OSU). He turns 80 in 2 weeks.

Moses,
Tell your dad that he should be using Tyvek tape, it's much better than duct tape!

He should have used JB Weld. "It's better than bailing wire!"

He generally reserves the wire for when the dust tape fails.

I once gave him a pair on New Balance running shoes. They were white. Dad thought they looked "funny". He spray painted them black. They looked like hell but he wore them for two years.

Everyone know the only two "tools" you need are duct tape and WD40...If it moves and its not supposed to, use the duct tape; if it doesn't move and its supposed to, use the WD40.

I saw the thread title & laughed. My father was the same. He never bought a new car in his life - even though he could well afford it. Everything - absolutely everything - was a jerry-rigged repair. It must have to do with the generation & the deprivations that they lived through in the depression, war etc.

Thanks for reminding me of him.

Ian

Thanks for sharing Moses! My Dad used to use duct tape for clothing repairs. i can hardly remember a time when he DIDN'T have duct tape on his belt or shoes.

Oh yeah, my dad had put some rigs together in his day......

I'm not sure I can bring myself to describe his 'exhaust fan' in his kitchen. Lets put it this way, you open up one of the kitchen cabinets, and there is big a55 hole in the side of his house, with an industrial fan of some kind mounted in there. Could probably evac the whole house in about a minute.

I'm losing it... that is spray-coffee-on-the-monitor funny.

Moses, lighten up and enjoy it. It's awesome.

Maybe I gave the wrong impression. My dad makes me laugh constantly. It's all good.
