Has anyone met or by God know/met an Astronaut?
Hello.
My Hero's are the past Astronauts. I admire just a few others but for NOT being any type of hero. I've gone to a conference and have spoken to Edgar Mitchell for at least 15 minutes. I've gone to another conference and have spoken with Jim Lovell. He is a very animated . I almost got to meet Wally Schirra at the San Diego AIR/SPACE Museum. Curious who ,if any of you have come across of any greats from this ERA.

I had two bosses that were - one a pilot and the other a mission specialist.

If you had met or spent any time with Buzz Aldrin you would have a different opinion of Astronauts.
I think the most accurate description of him is " Buzz Aldrin is a horrible human being who just happens to be the second man who walked on the moon" Sorry but true Steve

I've met many, but from the Shuttle era - not Apollo. I had several meetings with Jan Davis at MSFC and lots of dealings with miscellaneous astronauts at JSC/KSC.
IMHO, astronauts are the nicest, most intelligent group of superhuman overachievers I've ever dealt with. All of the 20 or so that I personally interacted with were astounding human beings.

I took a pee next to 2 of them in the men's room at Tinker AFB, while on a cross country flight when I was in the Navy. And then walked out to the transient flight line with them, their NASA T-38 was parked next to our S-3 Viking. They were shuttle guys, don't remember their names.

General Tom Stafford spent several hours a day for many days at our office at a former job. He was getting displays ready for his museum.
Stafford Air and Space Museum We built a lot of the photo exibits. I would scan his originals and restore the color. Many of the images had turned red from age. It was amazing to see some of the photos that were not published. He is an interesting man to say the least.

Never met any...
I often wonder if Buzz felt like he had to remind people who he is. Most people know the name of course but he has always lived in the shadow of Neil Armstrong - one of the most unassuming guys who ever lived considering his accomplishments. Neil rarely sought the spotlight yet I always see Buzz in interviews, TV commercials and even Dancing with the Stars!! No.. I don't watch the show. If I couldn't be Neil Armstrong I think I would rather have been one of the other 10 guys to have walked on the moon than "number two".

One of my friends worked for Buzz when he lived in Laguna Beach, he liked him but thought he was a little strange, what the heck, he was in the movie about walking on the moon, he was a movie star. He said Buzz always came to the door in his underwear but wasn't really weird, maybe just to lazy to put pants on or didn't care.

Never met an astronaut, but have encountered many folks who have gone beyond where an astronaut could possibly go.

when I was in college, astronauts would show up for different functions. I managed late nights at one of the restaurants that was located in the Union, where they often stayed. I hung out with several of them late, and then after the restaurant closed to hear stories.
I met jim lovell and gene kranz at a fish fry once.

My father grew up and was very good friends with Michael Collins. Met him many times. Super nice and humble guy. One of his jobs was to design the space suits for the Apollo missions. Too bad he didn't get to walk the walk on the moon.
I used to do some work on Edgar Mitchell's car back in the late 80's. He was bat **** crazy but a nice guy. He once told me that everyone that has gone to space comes back changed in very profound ways, especially the moon walkers. He would not elaborate. |

I got to meet this guy:
![]() Brian Binnie of Scaled Composites. He was the pilot during the successful Spaceship One flight that won the "X Prize" in 2004. Not a NASA astronaut but certainly a space flight pioneer. We saw the flight and later he gave a talk about the entire Spaceship One project at a pilots association meeting. We were invited to join him for a ride on Spaceship Two when space launch tours become available.

I used to work for the brother of Deke Slayton; When Dick heard I had an aerobatics lesson in a Pitts, he took me to the local strip and let me fly his Archer.
I spent time with and did some consulting work for Franklin Chang-Diaz. His life story is amazing. He told me a bit about what it was like to do EVA/Spacewalks (your feet get cold strapped to the remote arm). The most compelling thing he told me about being in space and looking down at the earth is that he felt he was the wrong person to be there. He said that poets, artists, writers should be there, that they had the ability to absorb the absolute wonder of it and share that experience with the world. I still get choked up typing that.
