Contact Lenses specifically Mono Vision

Tried the mono vision thing for a year and it really did not work for me. The distance portion was OK but I still could not read small close up text.

Went for my prescription renewal and told the Doc it sucked. Preferred to go with just distance and I'll use reading glasses as needed.

She convinced me to try the mono thing for another week but with a stronger reading lens.

Feels like I'm seeing double but I'm not. I can read stuff, not perfect but better, but still the experience kind of sucks.

Anyone else?

I wear contact lenses and my mono vision prescription doesn't really work well for close up viewing or small text reading either, but it works well for mid distance--like dash instruments. This works well for 95% of my vision needs. Binocular distance vision prescription makes anything within arm's length blurry so I stay with a compromise set up and use readers for (you guessed it) reading. If I wore glasses, I think it would be harder to reach a solution.

Part of the price for aging.

I tried it as well, and I couldn't get the hang of it. My doc and I tried a bunch of different combos. Distance vision was what I finally went with, and reading glasses.

For glasses, progressives work just fine for me, IF the computer monitor is set to the correct height. Otherwise, it's harder than just straight distance correction glasses.

It worked for me, but I was nearsighted and only used a lens on one eye to see distance. It was not perfect, though. The problem for most folks is that they tend to spend a lot of time without the lens in. That defeats the brain training itself to switch between the two eyes. I later got lasik in the same eye which is great...and works much better. Eventually I will probably need readers, but not yet.

The only way it will work is if the farsighted lens is on your dominant eye. Make sure that is the case. In-between distances will always be a little off. A bigger monitor or Iphone seems to help a lot for me..for the in-between.

Try multifocal contact lenses- Proclear is the most common. Might not work, but if it does you'll be a happy camper.

Gave up on my contact lenses as well. Couldn't see fine work or read.

My brain is easily fooled. The mono's worked perfectly as soon as I put them in. Best thing I ever did since the time I started needing reading glasses!

I'm the other way around, I have my close-up lens in my dominant eye.

This is very subjective, what works for one person won't necessarily work for someone else. You have to use trial and error to find what works for you, including swapping lenses between eyes to learn what works best for you.

The only thing I have problems with is shooting. Found the best thing to do is just aim with both eyes open.

I tried the slightly different Rx for reading and distance. I will just use reading glasses. I prefer to have stereo vision all the time.

I shoot both eyes open except when using moderate to heavy magnified optics.

Having been in the biz for some 30 years now, the correction of Presbyopia (age related farsightedness we all suffer from, with an onset typically in our mid 40s) via contact lenses has always presented a challenge. The use of monovision CLs (one eye corrected for distance/the other for near vision) has been around for some 50 plus years.

As the OP found out, it doesn't "work" for everyone. I know as I tried it myself and couldn't stand it for more than a couple of hours. For those that drive for a living or that require good distance vision at all times, it's probably not too safe either as you loose significant depth perception which might impair your night vision substantially.

In our practice we've had some success with certain multifocal contact lenses but even with these highly specialized lenses, the wearer is not experiencing true binocular vision. With many patients we end up with, after much trial and error, what we call a modified monovision fit.

So frustrated right now.

I have astigmatism.

My right eye, the reading eye is at 5 degrees and according to the doc contacts only correct in 10 degree increments meaning it'll never be perfect.

Told her screw it let's just go with straight contacts for distance both sides.

Get home and guess what, can't see my frikken keyboard clearly.

I guess I forgot how bad my close up vision was.

Even worse is I asked them if they can cut the lenses for my glasses. I have a couple very specific frameless sets that I love and won't wear anything else. The only place in the area that can cut for this manufacturer is a 40 minute drive each way.

Of course because of my specific astigmatism their lab can't cut the lenses.

Totally lost on what to do at this point.

I understand the frustration as I've been battling it for three or fours. I went with distance vision contacts (cuz it corrects my astigmatism, too) and I have a couple of pairs of readers. The monocular thing messed with my depth perception too much. So far I've been relatively comfortable doing surgery etc without my glasses sliding. My progressive bifocals drive me nuts because I'm frequently looking under them for fine up close stuff. FWIW...

That was my experience for a good 10 years or so. Then the distance vision went and to bi-focals I went. I tried progressive lens but they just didn't work for me. I use a pair of full frame reading glasses at the computer as bi-focals kill your neck.

Part of my annoyance.

When I left the 1st exam she gave me the glasses script which I noticed yesterday is multi focal which I did not want.

After the follow up she gave me the contacts script which is single vision.

so the Contacts are

OD S: -1.50 C: -2.25 A: 010 BD: 8.70 D: 14.50
OS S: -1.50 C: -1.75 A: 170 BD: 8.70 D: 14.50

My previous multi contact script from last year was

OD -0.50 -2.25 010
OS -1.00 -2.25 170

She said my right eye, reading eye, did not change much. I remember trying two different reader lenses. I picked the one in the last script even though it was a bit soft. I'm pretty sure the one I just tried this week is the sharper one that I did not like last year either.

Glasses are

OD S: -1.50 C: -2.25 Add: 1.75
OS S: -1.50 C: -1.75 Add: 175
