My Version Of A Vintage Boombox

I have decided to bestow upon the following, the title of coolest Christmas present ever (in this house, this year).

My son, as I've mentioned, is into cassettes. So we have been looking for inexpensive but groovy vintage boomboxes. I finally found one - with a twist.

He is currently listening to a Beethoven symphony on

For all you oldsters, recognize it?

Are you sure that's safe to use? Didn't one of those self destruct at the beginning of every episode of Mission Impossible?

Seriously, it looks like an old Sony portable "reporter recorder" (for taking on-the-fly recordings with a mike during interviews).

I was going to say it looked like the recorder we used in high school to record interviews we did for the school paper.

Yup. Sony TCM 5000 EV three head. I wanted one in the worst way back in the day, but it was too expensive. They are still pretty spendy now, but this one with a rusted battery compartment came up pretty cheap on eBay. My son used a Dremel and wire wheel to clean up the contacts and it works well. We haven't tested the recording but supposedly it works.

We just saw the Hobbit part 3. I told him about Led Zep's LOTR songs so he is going to find and listen to them. Battle of Evermore, Ramble On, etc.

"Sony TCM 5000 EV" Nice find.

I've been looking and an old school Digital Tape Recorder like this one.
I'm not really sure why I want one though... lol

Not quite as "old school", but would you be interested in a Sony PCM-M1 portable DAT? ...my "taping daze" are over...it should go to a good home

Swiss - made Nagra IV

Hey, jyl, this is what I was trying to describe with my clumsy prose the other day...

I used to work at an ad agency, and these were always on the sets of commercial shoots that I went to.

When I was searching this picture out, I found a whole bunch of high-end voice and sound cassette recorders from back in the day. I had no idea.

To me, the Nakamichi Dragon was the state of the art, but I guess that's because I was into music, rather than audio/video back in the day.

So what makes these things so good? High end but one speaker?

Thanks for the thought! However, I think you should sell it on eBay, it will probably fetch $100+.

As a nostalgic audiophile that got into records probably when they were at an all time low in the 90s, I never thought cassettes would come back

I see his cassette fascination as a vehicle to get him exposed to older music, stuff that isn't what all the other high schoolers are listening to, and as motivation to tinker and get some intuition of how things work.
