Not my best day.
I was working on the 65 in the shop and went into take a crap....and maybe watch a little football. Bout an hour later I returned to the shop to find it smoke filled.
I'm bummed. .......http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1421075187.jpg |

"Not your best day" but It could have been so much worse.
Chin up! |
Definitely not your best day, but this could have been much worse... That lovely car could have burned to the floor or your house could have burned down.
This is minor. angela |
Ouch! Good thing it was confined to the car.
|
I was doing some welding & grinding. Masking paper on the trunk flange & 2 big towels laying over the rear window. I did turn off the light before I left but some errant spark got something smoldering, I guess....I didn't go thru my usual check list ( been fabbing stuff out there for about 15 years) before leaving.
I got "lucky". There are enough flammable solvents out there to blow the shop off the map.....but I keep them away from the immediate work area. The gas tank is out of the car.....just a small victory for Murphy. |
I burned one to the ground once. Like stated, could have been much worse. My buddy lit one, and it burned his parents house down. He was never allowed to work on cars on their property again .
I was lucky, built the car in my parents garage, got it running , but my brand new holley was leaking fuel . I pulled the car outside overnight. When I went to fire it up the next morning, it backfired, and whoof! Burnt to the ground in the driveway, but saved the house . I had a fire extinguisher, but the gas fire laughed at it. This was a really, clean and fast 77 with a built large journal 327. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1421079026.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1421079037.jpg |
Sorry to see that.

Lesson learned, no halogen in house. Fire dept said they cause a lot of fires. The gas in a bulb is over 2,000 F degrees. When the lamp fell over the bulb exploded and the glass shards ignited the fire. Check out these new magnetic LED rechargeable lights. I have a few of them and they are great. If I find a link I will post it. |
uff-da. That's the suck.
|
Sorry to see this. I always worry about my Halogen shop light. Need to pick up one of the new LED shop lights before I have a similar story.
|
Ya got lucky for sure buddy! Just a reminder to us all to check and double check before we leave the work area!

JP, you're still vertical, right?
That's a good thing. You still got yer family? That's a good thing. You still got yer friends? OK maybe not ya old coot but ya still got me. Do you still have the shop? Well it's a hundred times better than my shop and I hate you for it. And ya obviously have a roof over yer haid to watch fooseball ........ and ya prolly gots food in the fridge to snack on ..... Doesn't sound to me like you got it so bad. Lotsa folk would be glad to switch places. It's just an old furd and you can fix it. Yer dad was a TV repairman and you got the ultimate set of tools. Now iffn you gots all burned up that would really suck. Be careful man!!!!!!! Tanks. |
GM products will do that, they after all are not Porsches.
|
Looks like you can save the car. What are the actual damages ?
|
JP,
So glad it wasn't worse. I came close about 14 years ago when I first got the old E. PO had a fellow strip off the MFI and put on carbs. I had the car trucked to my place and was sorting it out. One day I had to move it out of the garage. Getting it to go was a bit of a chore and when I got it parked in the yard, the smell of gas was bad. I opened the deck lid and was not happy to see gas running from the fuel lines at the front of the engine compartment. One would almost think actually tightening the clamps on gas line connections would be part of the install procedure but I guess everyone works differently. It wasn't long after that a fire extinguisher was mounted . Play Safe! Best Les |
