College Athletics New Low ?

College Athletics

I am not a tweeter but a friend sent this picture to me. I'm sure Ohio State coaches and AD are reeling on this one.

I can't believe this guy did this. This maybe a new low. How do you Address this type of thinking?

Jones tweeted that 27 months ago.
He appears to have matured some.

I do believe that this type of thought process is not rare.

Simple rule for ALL athletes. A real true C average or you are off the team even if you can run 100 yards in 6 seconds.

That will happen right after congress all get together and passes legislation that institutes term limits for congress and eliminates retirement pay for all of congress.

And then take govt. handouts as well after graduating (if you can call it that) with a degree in basket weaving.

Remember Dexter Manley, from the Redskins? He received a degree from Oklahoma State and was close to illiterate. The guy had a 3rd grade reading level ("ware da library at?"). He went public with the fact that he didn't participate in academics at the school.

It still happens. Winning teams are big busine$$

A lot of these guys go to college for no reason other than making the majors.

If one goes to college to become say an attorney there is no guarantee that one will be successful or land a job upon graduating if one graduates at all.

Same with people who go to college solely for the possibility that it will lead to a pro contract.

It's their dice, let them roll em. If they don't realize the value of taking advantage of the educational opportunity that's their problem same as anyone else that goes to college and blows it.

But why not create a Sports curriculum?

Professional sports are more than just on field performance.

There are a lot of off field careers common to all sports.

Conditioning, representation/management, finance, back and front office operations, logistics, facilities management, coaching, announcer/on air talent, referee, etc.....

Professional sports are a business.

If you want to be a professional athlete then the degree includes on and off field aspects of that business.

A "guy I know" was a top collegiate athlete back in the 70's. He had "tutors" attend classes, take notes, and unofficially write papers and take tests for him.

He was up north playing summer ball one year and at the end of the summer league, he was presented a report card with three A's for classes he didn't even know he took.

BUT ...... it all caught up to him and he was forced to go pro before his senior year or face academic ineligibility.

Later he regretted not getting a degree bigtime.

The thing is, your body only has so many good years in it. I say use it while you have it. There is no reason an athlete can't go back and get a degree after a pro career.

The real purpose of college is education. If any athlete can't make at least average grades they should loose their scholarship.

The reality is the college games are just a farm club or minor league for the NFL.

Wrestling or track & field top athletes don't lead to a pro career.

Several football players have gone on to the NFL and they are functionally illiterate. That is obscene and devalues the college degree of everyone else that when to the same school.

I don't think a Sports curriculum would devalue a college's degrees any more than an Art History curriculum would.

Agree, an education, in one's chosen profession. Which for a lot of them is Pro Athlete.

They have no aspirations for anything else.

I see little difference between wanting to be a Pro Athlete or wanting to being an Engineer.

EDIT: And the other part of the reality is College Sports are profitable for the schools. In a sense the top athletes that get free rides are employees who are compensated not with cash but with the cash equivalent in the form of a free eduction.

There is no real "college" in college sports.
