Would you sell the 850CSI for a 911 or keep both?
Hi there guys. Since I have always been a huge 911 fan I am thinking about getting one. The dream is a 930 or a 964 turbolook
There is one thing that I have been thinking. I have BMW e31 850 "CSI" as I had all moved from a crashed CSI into my 850 and I love it. I have put actually crazy heart into and and a lot of love At the moment I am having mixed feelings and some might say afraid of owning 2 cars. What would you do? Give me good arguments Sell the BMW and get the 911? Wait and just keep the BMW and get a 911 to the collection? A friend of mine said that when I would get the 911 I would just forget about the BMW. Another friend that actually owns both said to own them both. So What would you do? Here is my e31. http://i1133.photobucket.com/albums/...psutvdj7jc.jpg http://i1133.photobucket.com/albums/...ps9946z4i2.jpg http://i1133.photobucket.com/albums/...psfe0fd261.jpg http://i1133.photobucket.com/albums/...ps200b7d35.jpg http://i1133.photobucket.com/albums/...psba78faad.jpg Went also to a e31 meeting in Munich. 25 year annivers. The pink one has 315 on the rear http://i1133.photobucket.com/albums/...psf591444f.jpg http://i1133.photobucket.com/albums/...ps2cef3caf.jpg |
Why another thread about the same thing?
|
I was trying to edit the other thread, but wasnt able to. Having a mixed feeling time now and wanted to hear what some of you have to say about this :)
|
You should keep them both until you know you are a happy 911 owner. That is a lot more car than a 911, and you won't get another one like it once you sell it.
Trust me on that. |
I would keep the BMW at least until you have the 911 sorted and tuned to your liking. We all like to put our special touches on a vehicle, whether it need a paint job or suspension overhaul, it will be nice to have another cool car to drive while you make the 911 the way you want it.
|
Keep it! Cars with history can not be replaced. Each has something to offer.

Thats funny Gliding Serpent.
I was just finishing your whole thread :P Great cars you have |
Keep the BMW and get a 911.
Like others have said, they are totally different animals. |
Keep it.
One of my favorite cars. Sexy beast. |
It is pretty sexy.
Have you seen this track beast? :D Just for fun. https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCXcmXjZE2Iu-MT0oMxWG2OA |
Too many cars........
Don't fret over owning 2 cars. Right now, I have 5 including an SC and a Jaguar XJS convertible. To my notion, too many cars are when you can't keep them all serviced!
|
Keep it and have both!
That e31 is, to me, pretty rare. I have only seen one of them in person and it was spectacular! |
You can long distance an e31 easily.
WithThat said get the 930, sell the e31 replace it with a lower maintenance modern car. |
Both, and as stated earlier you will never be able to replace the E31. I let my E24 go and have been kicking myself in the ass ever since.
|
If you have the means, keep the 850 and buy the Porsche. I've always like the 850, especially the "CSI".
|
Yeah, the e31 is one of a kind to me :)
|
as mentioned above if you sell the CSI you may never find another one. After selling my 928 that I had owned for 13 years I have to often kicked myself for letting it go in these past 10 years. I too put a lot of time in upgrades and stacks of money.
2 years ago I picked up a 95 M3 for a song, and have it up to standards now. Yesterday I picked up my 996 C4 and well now I have "The ultimate driving machine" and of course "No substitute" and wouldn't have it any other way. |
Obviously very different experiences. My personal take is that the 850 is a multipurpose machine, while the 911 is very narrow focus. That's both good and bad, but if I had to have only one, I'd take the 850. I've had both an E28 M5 and a Carrera, and regret selling the M5. I'm glad to have the Carrera, don't get me wrong, it has a purity that nothing else does, but the E28 was soooo good at so many things. I suspect your sorted 850 is as well, if a little heavy.
Another thing to consider is that you'd be buying as 930 prices have gone somewhat ballistic, and that may or not last. Not sure how money factors, but it must to some degree if you're not keeping the 850. If you just need a new canvas for mods, well, different story. |
Its not that I need a new canvas for modding. There is still plenty to be done to the e31 and it seams that there are coming more and more tuning parts for it.
Its just that I always hear that the 911 is so iconic and perfect and it just makes me want one. Also of course I love the look of it and so on. The thing with the e31 is that its very special to me. When I was 13 me and my mom were going to Pizza hut and I hear some guys talking really loud. I look back and see tha e31 standing there with 3 very scary guys sitting in it. " of them were drunk as crazy. My moms says: come son, lets get away from those crazy guys. Few weeks later my mom tells me her old friend from School called her and was coming for a visit. Later that day I was just playing around and that car drives up to our posession and I just think I will **** my pants. 3 scary guys come out of it and ask if my mom (ask for her name) lived here. I say yes. Then i turns out those are the friends. The adults go and have fun with BBQ and stuff while I am just hypnotised by the car. It is amazing. After many minuts of admiring I go up to the guy ad tell him: When you are ready to sell call me. Years fly by and 5 years later he calls my mom. She tells me if I want the car it is for sale. It took me a second to say: Im on my way. I didnt care about anything. I had a fkn amazing sporty looking car and loved the way it looks, drives and so on. Then the fun part started. I had it restored to perfect condition and now I am on crossroads, because I would like to own both |

Keep it. The Csi is as close as BMW got to a production M8. Even with all the downsides of the 8 series, you wont find another one.
|
I'm afraid of the aging electronics in that bimmer.
|
Thats why I am getting rid of most of it :)
I drive my machines and I drive them hard. I am now considering some bucket seats or some Recaro CS |

Which one do you like more?

Friends don't let friends drive Audis.

I had 2 classic cars at the same time for about a year. The problem I had, and you might too, is devoting enough time to either one to enjoy both. Its like having 2 girlfriends. Which one to drive today? Boy, that pinkish 850 is most beautiful, I'd like to have that one in my garage.

Agreed. The CS's have a nice look, but the adjustable BMW seats are more in character with the car, more comfortable, and very supportive for how luxurious they are. Plus, the totally match the interior.

Can't speak for Bryan, but I believed he meant the seats already in the car

If you don't need the money, I vote keep it. Very different cars, both cool in their own way.
|
I'd say keep it.... I've always wanted an e31. I have an e28 M5 ad and e24 635, the e31's are a beautiful design.... one day I'll add one to the collection.
|
I think it's going to be best if I just keep the car and add a 911.
|
Andre, why are you averse to owning 2 cars? Once you're older, insurance for a 2nd car is almost free. If you've got the room for 2 cars, and the spare cash, try owning 2 cars. It's also great to not be forced to always finish a DIY project the same day b/c you need the car to drive to work tomorrow.
|
If at all possible financially, I would get both cars and decide then. Definitely not ahead of time. It also depends on what type of driving you plan on. Do you do track events? Autobahn runs (looks like you are in Europe?). The 930 is much more of a sports car / track weapon than the 850 ever will be. The 850 is a great GT car.

Definitely keep both. I was looking at 850 BMWs when I bought my 560SEC a few years ago and sometimes I wonder what ownership would have been like with the V12. The 560SEC has served me well but has cost me a fair but to play catch-up on the deferred maintenance by the past few owners and to make the car "right". The 850 is such a beautifully styled car..timeless from every angle.

I just drove the csi and there is no chance I will sell it. It's a blast to drive!!! Also left it at my mechanic
