From a time when men were men and race cars sounded like race cars...

A few years ago I was able to be about four feet away from a 917 as it idled by in first gear.

Absolutely intoxicating sound, even at idle.

Saw a reproduction at Barrett Jackson a couple of years ago. It was a much, much smaller car than I had imagined.

+1.

We hear all the stories of the "Monster" 917. Then to see how tiny it really is.

Not putting miles on your car is like not having sex with your girlfriend, so she'll be more desirable to her next boyfriend.

Hey Frank, hope you are doing well!

I've watched/listened to it 10 times now, never gets old. Same for the Ferrari Shell video. I could watch and listen to the 2nd and 3rd cars on that video forever.

That is a good clip, love the sound and driven by an experienced driver, but it's not balls out.

Shows my age, but I had the real experience of hearing 917-30 driven by Mark Donahue, at the Mosport Can-Am as a kid.
He didn't care one bit about saving the engine. Whole different level of sweet noise.
I'll never forget it, every one was totally flipped out with the car and Donahue. He was freakish fast, nothing touched him, even though he didn't win this race.
I had to look it up and think back. My brother took me every year to the Can-Am, we would camp the weekend. I saw Donahue at least 2 of his 3 times.
