Didn't Wayne install a deck over his pool for safety?
 

Anyone know if he ever uncovered it?

I seem to recall him erecting one of the eight wonders of the world in his pool.

Yep, I'm pretty sure that if he installed a removable hatch, you could park a car on it and work from underneath like at an oil change place.

As I recall, the thing was beefy enough to park a Peterbilt on it.

Cool, but that pool will always be frigid without a heater. Need so to catch lots of sun to keep it warm!

Why did he do that? Did he not use his pool?

One of his children has Down's.

It was for her safety.

I did remember it was for safety. I saw this and thought it was a clean design - and safe too!

In reality, it doesn't look very sophisticated or expensive to do. Of course, I could be wrong too :)

I like this one better!

But I really want to see the mechanical portion.

Our house backs up to a pretty steep hill. Consequently the usable portion of our back yard is quite narrow. A prior owner put in a lap pool and spa. Nice, but the edge of the pool is 36" from the back door.

So, when we bought the house, 20 years ago, I wanted a pool cover somewhat like Wayne's that could be walked on for party time so those who drink a bit too much didn't just walk straight into the pool when exiting the house. I set out to make one, even had a bunch of galvanized metal brackets made, then I realized the cover would be too heavy to lift off to access the pool for swimming. Project abandoned.

That cover in the first post would have been perfect, but our days of drunken revelry have waned. Not to mention, I suspect the cost is considerable compared to the 2"x8" planks I had in mind.

I saw a lot of Olympic pools when my girls payed water polo. I saw several contraptions for lifting the handicapped in and out of the water. They all used water (hydraulic) pressure to do so. My assumption was they were afraid of any A/C motors etc near the water. And they were very simple machines.

Many of the disappearing deck pools I've seen make me, too, wonder about all the mechanics, and how much of them are both hot and wet while the pool is in use? Perhaps they've figured other means. DC?
