Very cool... The 911 has always been the one to beat.

A recent article in Road & Track clearly stated that the objective of the AMG GT is to compete with the 911.

I don't think it will so much because it is clearly a GT car, and not the sports car the 911 is (but those lines have become blurred over the years), and while few people race their 911's, the racing heritage is important to their image.

Good ad; makes me want to go out and buy one. Well, if I could afford to blow $100k on a car. They will sell a bazillion of those here in SoCal, alone. The average 911 buyer doesn't know the difference between a GT and a sportscar, anyway.

I consider my 997 a GT car. Cayman is much closer to the original spirit of the 911 IMHO.

Beautiful car. I agree very similar from the back but that long front hood on the MB just makes the car. I really thought the MB would be more expensive than the $130K price but still too much for me.

When I replace my 997 DD I will take a hard look at the MB. Love the looks and the performance delta between the two cars is hard to ignore if you consider the price. I usually buy a 2-3 YO car so all the comparo's will make the decision easier.

Yep, I didn't drive any 997 or 991 variants, but I drove a couple of 996s and then checked out some boxsters and caymans and felt that the boxster/cayman reminded me of my old '88 targa more than the 996, which was a capable car, but kind of muted.

That was a Mercedes? I thought it was a Chrysler Crossfire.

Pffff. The Porsche will go 200k km with oil changes. The Benz will break down monthly. Every modern MB product I've dealt with, either through work or personal, has been problematic, especially the Smart. I'll never own one again, I doubt. Porsches on the other hand, aside from the whole IMS issue, as rock solid.

Mercedes should have used a Bullitt.

They've stated on multiple occasions that the AMG-GT was designed to compete with the 911. Not that I'm a buyer, but pity there's no manual transmission option.

They did a nice job building a modern 928. Why are they so ugly?

Having seen one in person, I think it's quite stunning. I would kick one out of bed for being an automatic.

Nice car, and what's encouraging is MB resale values. These will be dirt cheap in a few short years.
