Hey - what about a Stewart & Stevenson M1078A1?
Looks like a domestic version of the Unimog!

Maximum speed: 58mph lol

Domestic? IDK…Doesn't seem to have the panache. But hey, that extra 8 MPH is HUGE!

Just picked this one up yesterday, will clean it up and resell. Needs some minor rust repair in the driver's floor, which all seem to collect mud and water and rust out. I have floors all stamped out and ready to weld in. Has only 930 hours on the motor and less than 18000km on the speedo. Has hydraulics, PTO, and dump box.

Wow, really like that one.

Just needs some new gearing so it's more street friendly, wonder where I can find some gears.... :)

I haven't got it in yet, just paid for it. Need to have it shipped in. Don't know the gearing yet, but some of them have "fast axle" gearing in them. With standard gearing top speed is about 58mph. Changing the gearing can get you up to 80mph if you are crazy enough to try it!

Ever been in a "high-speed wobble"

Tobra 02-10-2015 10:35 AM

80 mph in that Ox cart?

Harvey,
Looks like a nice truck! You will get plenty of positive comments no matter where you go!:D And it will take longer to get anywhere, as now you have to answer all the questions you will be getting about your new toy! It can take 10 minutes to get into Home Depot from the parking lot as a crowd gathers.

Just offloaded it from the carrier this morning.
It seems to be well kept.

I'll start getting the tags and insurance on Tuesday, then can go play with it!

Thanks for your time and advice with my questions, Von!

unimog: (v). to afflict or be afflicted by a fellow pelican with a PPOT transmissible disease or disorder or incurable notion to buy an impractical vehicle or trinket. Contagious. Effects similar to being Rickrolled by Gottlieb Daimler and Rube Goldberg and Charles Manson Ron Popeil all in one day.

Where'd you get it? If I may ask, how much did it set you back?

It is a 1968 model 404.1, Swiss troop transport.
I bought in in VA.

I had a PPI done before pulling the trigger. There is a little bit of rust in the cab, and I mean little. Like 2cm x 10cm, in the lower pax door frame. Obviously, it has some patina, but I think it is a very good unit based on the PPI and based on what I see today.

Doesn't seem to have been abused off-roading.

Harvey,
Nice score! Next time I get down to SC I need to come and see that. Maybe if I bring the Range Rover we can do some wheeling--just kidding as the wife would kill me.
