help with NAVY recruiter
the son of one of the guys i work with is at the navy recruiter RIGHT now wanting to sign the paper work to go in as a SP or police officer.
the ONLY job they say they have is a COOK. they are telling him to sign up now as a cook and he can try to transfer to security. i think this is all BS. i think these guys are a couple of used car salesman trying to pressure him into something he does not want to do just to fill a slot. they say they only know what jobs are only THAT day. i was in the air force and it was nothing like that when i went in. when i went in i signed up for gauranteed electronics then waited on a date to go to basic. the navy claims they can not do this. is there anyone out there that has had recent navy experience that knows how the recruiting works? oh, the recruiters are also claiming they will do all they can once he signs up to get him into security. i did tell him that is not true. once his son signs that paper they are DONE.

I don't know but why doesn't he just become a regular cop, meaning not associated with the military?

Do not sign anything unless it guarantees the school he wants. Wait, they'll come calling many times but he has to hold out for what he wants. Recruiters have quotas to fill and they'll do it the easiest faster way they can.
Things may have changed but as far as I know once you've signed the recruiter is done except to get you through processing and on to boot. #1 son almost fell for this when he went in the Navy ten years ago and when re enlisted last year in the Army reserve they tried to pull the same trick you're talking about on him. He waited and got the rating he wanted, he just had to wait for it to come around. when I went in 40 years ago it was the same game the recruiters played |

If I remember correctly, when I was in the Army years ago the only way you could change your MOS was if you re-enlisted after 3 years service and even then they would ***** about the cost of having to re train you.

Do NOT sign... If it's not in the contract, it didn't happen.

he is dead set on the navy
i told him to tell his son that if he cant go into security that he was going to the AF. then leave. what gets me is that they are telling him there is NOTHING else and that they cant see what will be open in the future. problem is the boy is there by him self and i am betting there are 2 or 3 recruiters working him over trying to get hiim in a a cook. i also told the guy i work with that in the AF the people that failed the tech schools ended up as cooks, bus drivers, security and jobs like that. (i did not say security but they did). i dont think his parents knew how all this was going to work. what they did is took the boy to fort jackson about 3 hrs away for him to sign up and pick his job. then i guess he would come home and wait for his date to go in. when i went in the local recruiter did all this. i signed my initial paper work and got my job then waited on a date. i still was not "in" at this time, just saying i would go and gauranteeing my job. i think the navy is getting these kids away from parents so they can manipulate them.

What did he score on his asvab?
I believe that based on that score they offer him a slot at A school. Least that is how it used to work, when I was in. I wouldn't sign anything with out a guaranty of an A school, the striker route is way harder. NAVY,Never Again Volunteer Yourself, ps, best experience of my life! |

Do not sign unless it is in the contract. PERIOD. Also, he needs to move off of his DEAD SET on the damn Navy and go to both the Army, Marines and AF. And why not go to the Coast Guard, those guys do police work as a major part of their duties???
Over 30 in the Navy.

Seabees sought for master-at-arms jobs This is due to the cut backs in numbers of funded billets. This boy is competing with a hell of a lot of folks for the job he wants. And there is no future it it once he reaches E4.

What was his ASVAB score? depending on his score, he may be locked out of some of the more technical jobs... Being a navy MA isn't nearly as cool as it sounds.

he's meant to be something like a cook.. or his scores just don't give him many options.. mind you the Navy had some of the best chow I've had.. but right now that recruiter need's a cook checked of his quota list.. Rika |

Sounds like he could use advice of legal counsel.
Is there a lawyer/family friend who could help out? They are the most experienced people in the world at reading the fine print, researching protocol, procedure, policy, and locking things down on paper.

Send a PM to CrustyChief here on the forum. Where do you live? The head of SE USA recruiting is a friend of mine. I spent ten years in the Navy. I saw that Master at Arms was a black hole rating that everyone who couldn't/wouldn't do anything else converted to.

I have to thank my father for going with me to the recruiter.
He was savy and worked a deal that if I dropped out or got dropped from the UDT program, that I was going to get a "A" or "B" school. Me thinking that I was a certified diver, UDT (SEAL/BUD/s) might work out. I got dropped. I didn't ring the bell. Never even got that far but I was sent to Radioman School and enjoyed four years of active duty. Don't enlist unless they offer some vocational training that can find employment in the civilian sector. Radioman equated to an electrical apprenticeship on the outside. It payed off. |

Navy vet here TOTAL BS that will never happen he needs a guaranteed A school in his enlistment contract. A mess cook requires no school and is the WORST job you will have in the Navy.

Its called "blood money '
They need some cooks. Simple. DONT DO IT ! Next the military might promise you the school, however their little trick is, they DID NOT promise you the job that goes with it. OUCH ! Wait till next month, or go to another recruiter. Have him take some test to prove he is a better suited for brand X job.

If you are sitting on a GED or just came in last in the HS diploma group, you might
consider "COOK". Why? Because I would rather be a cook in the Navy than a cook at Dennys. Face it. Not everyone's son has an IQ of 110 (average) or higher. That's life. After I have exhausted all my resources of selling myself as something I am not.... I would be cooking my ass off on an aircraft carrier. Lots of future chances to move up while serving. V.A. medical for life. College paid for. First home assistance without getting ripped off. Discounts at most major big box stores and on and on. So you are a cook. What is wrong with that?. You are not Phi Beta Capa for goodness sake. The paychecks are solid for what you are doing. Now if you go in the recruiters office with some junior college and have been tested to have (GCT/ARI) an IQ of 120, then no... don't fall for spending time aboard the USS Clinton peeling potatoes. Good Luck. |
