Yes Sushi please. In a rut, Uni is always pleasing.

Hey Scottmandue, another traditional Japanese sushi eater! There is a place close to you (Torrance) that ONLY serves traditional style…live giant clam, natto, MTN potato, etc. I'll drive down and meet you for lunch next week. I'm always looking for an excuse to head down there. I'm often the only "haole" in there.

Ok, I had to look it up..

uni is actually the animal’s gonads (which produce the milt or roe). Uni ranges in color from rich gold to light yellow, - See more at: Sushi Items - Uni (Sea Urchin)
Sea urchin gonads? May need to think about that one.

Sea Urchins only survive in the best sweetest ocean waters.
The canary in the coal mine.
I won't say more.

Savor that delicacy now, because it will be unavailable next decade.

The missus and I are about 95% nigiri. She'll occasionally order chirashi, and we both occasionally order a roll. I usually stick to rolls when the place is just so-so. I do like the occasional California roll or futomaki. She'll occasionally have an eel-avocado roll. Nigiri is where it's at though.

I've always wanted to try natto, but I haven't seen it anyplace yet. Uni is OK, but not in my go-to list of stuff to order. I prefer various fish.

Saba is by far the missus' favorite and very high on my list of fish too. If I'm someplace where the sushi is really good, I'll eat just about anything (and have) and like it.

I think a better name is actually "sea urchin roe". I think it's eggs, not actually nuts.

Natto is very rarely served in sushi bars patronized by mostly americans. You almost have to go to a Japanese community to find it. it has a very bitter, yet sweet taste, but the texture scare most gringos off. It's a little slimy.

Sushi is my kryptonite! I have it at least twice a week. Been that way for many years. The bugs in my gut are allies...

Don't mince words out of politeness, LOL.
It tastes like rotten rat balls in dried bull come.

But like any fine yogurt it's the very best thing on the menu after a few tries.

I thought I had been shown the best until mid 2014 in Santa Barbara. Fishing boats arriving with fresh catch as the trucks to local purveyors waited. Big hauls of urchin were brought up. Fisherman had a special device to split the urchin and reveal the goodness. There on the dock, sun setting. Mind blowing goodness. Ruined me to uni going forward.

It's the journery. No worries.

I started to take Uni when out skin diving at the CA north coast. Can't compare fresh with sushi restaurant - that's for sure. Any leftovers from the evening goes well in the omelet in the Morning ...

We got pretty good sushi in Hawaii, but I still don't eat natto and uni.

Sashimi is my favorite. Either tuna or salmon but I'll do octopus too.

Hamachi sushi and dragon roll. I'm a pure Americanized sushi eater.

Uni? Maybe the Uni I had was bad. It tasted like how you would imagine the smell of stale urine would taste

But I love sushi. Here's my lunch from a place in Japantown in San Jose, CA.

Uni seems to be one of those things that can be good or bad with not a lot of in between.

Yeah, kind of weird. Especially since I don't remember seeing it anyplace that I've ever had sushi.
