Paging Pelican vets.

Our Bordercollie got in a fight with two other dogs Wednesday evening.
She got her asz chewed, literally...
We went to the vet a she had a 4cm gash in her rear left leg, and a good patch of skin torn loose from the flesh.
The gash was partially stitched so any fluids and pus can come in case of inflammation.
She is also on antibiotics.

When we feel on the upperside of that leg it feels like there are a lot of very tiny bubbles of air or fluid inside, moving around when squeezed. It is very weird to the touch, sponge like and you can even hear it when you squeeze it...
It does not seem to be painful but we are worried nonetheless.
Seeing a vet again asap.
In the mean while, any vets got an idea what this could be??

Our little border collie thinks she is a pretty big deal too.
Hope your girl gets better soon...
Sorry I am of no help other than that.

Went to the vet.
Air is entering via the open wound and dispersing (sp?) under the skin.
Hence the bubbly spongy feeling.
Meds and massage will help.
This is turning out to be a very expensive asz mauling....

Ouch! Both for your wallet and the dog!

When Peps was 6 months old she stepped on a shard of pottery in the back yard that was razor sharp. A large flower pot had soil in it and had gotten water in the soil. The water froze and the pot had broken into long pieces.

I had let her in from her visit to the puppy facilities (back yard) and found her bleeding like a stuck pig. She was oblivious to it. My vet wasn't open as it was the weekend so we went to the emergency pet hospital to have her stitched up. $$$

We went to back to our vet the next week and he cleaned up the wound and re-stitched it and dressed the wound. He added ultrasound treatment at each dressing change (2x per week).

The vet kept us on an open tab and didn't ask to settle up money wise until Peppers foot was completely healed. I was expecting it to be a pile of cash but when he told me the amount I couldn't get my credit card out fast enough to pay before he changed his mind.

If anyone in Calgary is looking for a great vet, PM me and I will send you his contact information.

As long as the doggy will be okay the cash is a moot point. I am glad yours is on the mend. I am on my way to pick up the ashes of my little kitty we just lost after a six month battle that he lost. I think it was a total of three grand when the bottom line hit, but that doesn't matter.
I think we need to give your dog some lessons in Chuck Norris-ness.

Yeah, cash is a moot point, but still, paying for the mess after she started the fight, is sour grapes.
A fight With a Dogo, Argentino and an American Stafford no less.....
She really got her asz handed to her this time... I figure she was lucky the other guy was doing his best to stop his dogs as well. (His dogs were on a leash, ours was tied to a tree and took the branch right off when she charged....)
And if I thought she has learned her lesson, that would be ok, but I think she has already forgotten it...

Stiil sad news 'bout the kitty, hang in there, buddy.

Sorry to hear of your pup's misadventures, G. Not that it makes a difference now, but that crunchiness you felt is called crepitus. It was from air bubbles under the skin. In your dog's case, it was probably from washing the wound out by the vet. Not a big deal and not unusual after irrigation. But there are also times when it can be the sign of a very bad and aggressive infection. Given your dog's situation, it wa probably the former (irrigation) and not the latter (infection). But had there not been a washout (just the bite) and if that crepitus was also painful/tender, then there would have been more cause for worry. Best of luck with your canine buddy.

Geronimo, that is a great looking dog.

I was racing this weekend at Rd Atlanta when my mom called to tell me that one of my dogs had to go back to the emergency clinic; his 3rd trip in the last 3 months. She was very upset and when I got home yesterday I saw why: his hind legs are almost paralyzed. He is 15 years old, so this may be his time, unless he makes another miraculous recovery.

Enjoy their company while you can; their time is sweet but short.

She looks like a good doggie...
She also looks like she appreciates your investment in her future!
Hope she heals quickly.

I'd say you should be happy she's still alive if that's all the damage she suffered from a fight with two dogs like that. Just the Dogo should have been enough. Hope she heals fine.
