Local Fishing Thread

It seems like we have a lot of fisherman on the board. How about a thread about the fishing we do near our homes…your local fishing.

Many could post pictures of the Hawaiian honeymoon day-trip monster marlin or the Alaskan cruise king salmon…But I'd like to know what type of fish you guys catch on a day-trip with the kids or grandkids.

I'm limited to the ocean (or muddy-lake stocked trout that will eat a bottle cap). I guess I could go to Castiac and fight 5,000 bass boats casting for the same 6 largemouth  (I can't wait to leave SoCal for So Carolina).

Let's see your biggest local catch...pike, walleye, perch, redfish, crappie, brownie, etc…

Summer white seabass…

Winter Halibut…

Wow, nice fish! I don't have any pics of fish on my computer. I pretty much fly fish all the time. Mostly up on the Kern and around No Cal rivers. I've been doing more surf fly fishing lately, around Mondo's and Oil Piers and further up towards Carpenteria and Moro.

Here are some from Costa Rica, I never caught the biggest. I hooked a Black Marlin close to Nicaragua, close to Ollie's Point, but no pictures. I caught a large Sail in Costa Rica but will have to find the picture. I can't find any pictures from East Cape Mex. but all I caught there was Dorado.

Next time you go let me know! I want to start fly fishing in the surf. I see them doing it all the time when I go to Mondo's paddle boarding.

What do you use, a tall 6#-8# I suppose??? Maybe a crab-like fly like used on Bonefish or permit? I think I have the gear. What are you catching? Crokers? Perch?

Craig T 02-24-2015 10:29 AM

LOL…Craigster, we must have hit send at the same time. As soon as I posted to you, your details were there. I will look into it today.

Bill Douglas 02-24-2015 10:46 AM

Fly fishing in the sea is fun. It makes hooking into any fish exciting.

craigster59 02-24-2015 10:55 AM

I use a 6 or 8 weight 9 foot rod. The flies are Clousers, Razzlers, Surfin' Merkins and crab imitations. Usually catch Barred Surf perch, Guitarfish, small Halibut and if your stealthy, Corbina. Eric's Tackle in Ventura can set you up. I'll let you know when I get over that way, maybe in a week or two.

Rot 911 02-24-2015 10:56 AM

I don't have any fish pictures right now, but the fishing is good right off the dock of our cabin at Lake of the Ozarks! Crappie, bass, catfish are the favorites.

My boy with a flounder which is our main pursuit in the summer months. Keeper size is 16", 22" + is worth telling your buddies about, 26" is worth telling the local fishing newspaper. Absolutely fantastic eating fish.

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1424810122.jpg

40" rockfish from late January a few years back on my boat. These big boys pass by the Md coast late fall into early winter. Have to be caught within 3 miles of coast (EEZ zone). COLD arse ocean fishing but worth it on the table.

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1424810216.jpg

My son caught the first fish on our new to us boat several years back.

Heading out early on the charter boat. Big orange things are planer boards used kinda like outriggers but in the water. This guy runs 17 lines IIRC. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1424810968.jpg

Couple options. Typically 9 or 10wt overloaded by one size. If fishing from the beach into the surf an intermediate sinking line. What is more fun (imo) is to find a bar and walk out to it then cast back towards the beach in the trough. Pick up a Rubbermaid dish drying pan and make a stripping basket out of it with weed whacker line and a belt.

edit: Just saw the original response to this question. You guys must have some calm winds to get away with a 6 weight on the beach!

porsche4life 02-24-2015 01:02 PM

Craig, the surf fly fishing sounds fun! I'd like to try that sometime if I'm ever out there with time to kill!

I haven't found a good local fishing spot in AZ yet. Just haven't had time. :(

I have 8 and 10 wt fly rods, both with alum saltwater reels and a good stripping basket. I'll have to put some heavier sinking line on and get some of Craig's recommended flies. I'm going to give this a try, maybe friday :D

Craig I have to wonder if that halibut tastes like our flounder (fluke). If so that is one heck of a lot of good eating you have there!

I've got doubles of everything except waders. If you're out towards the warmer months you won't need them, just shorts and t shirt. Lots of fun!

ledhedsymbols 02-24-2015 02:30 PM

I consider myself extremely fortunate to live in Western Washington. The fishing here is pretty good. Salmon and steelhead fishing is one of my favorite things to do here. Here are a couple of highlights that I have handy.

Sounds like fun Craig!

I need to get a better set of waders for the AZ rivers, my hip waders weren't tall enough on a recent trip!

Day before Christmas from the golf course pond. I suspect high levels of fertilizer.

It spoke english and walked back into the pond.

I'll be there with you in just two years :D I'm doing a real estate search trip in a couple weeks for canal front property in the Tampa/Tarpon Springs area, then heading up to John's and James Islands in SC for waterfronts. My wife wants SC, I want Gulf. My dream is to walk out on my own dock to fish and paddle board everyday.

I would LOVE to fish New Zealand. I've a couple friends who did in the navy, and they had nothing but wonderful things to say about the whole place. They said the fishing was fantastic and the climate beautiful.

Maybe for the wife and I on our 10th anniversary.... That gives me a couple years to plot.

Caught this Walleye about 20 minutes North of here in the Red River. The river flows thru the city, but the big Walleye are North of a dam. It was 15 lbs 4 oz.

So tonight while I'm fishing this snake moves right from beneath my shoes into the water and just stays there. It's a big snake and I'm surprised, but I manage to snap a photo. I'm just hoping it wasn't a moccasin. Looks like a banded water snake.

I had to fiddle with the color so you could see the thing, sorry about the orange water.

Cheers Craig!

I got lucky to find work in SWFL where everybody is retiring. This economy has not been good for many years.

Now I'm debating kayak vs paddle board, vs boat.

I do most of my fishing standing anyway.

Looks like a hoot. We've got guys around here that tow salmon flies behind their ocean kayaks.

Every odd year here, the pink salmon show up by the millions and it's a riot on a fly rod!

I tried pulling a plastic swim bait behind my SUP and all I caught was a stinky mackerel. I had to finish the last hour of the paddle smelling that damned thing. Took two weeks to get the smell out of my paddle handle. Our West Coast mackerel are different than the East Coast. Only good purpose is catfish bait.

I used to do this right from the beach by my house and bring back nice halibut and sea bass…But gave it up after being sniffed and bumped buy a 300 lbs mako shark.

I went back two or three times afterward, but never could get comfortable again. When a harbor seal almost gave me a heart attack, I said "no mas". Plus…its CHEATING!

BTW…The fish on the deck is a 67lbs white seabass :D

It'll be in salt water at the end of July. Fresh water starting mid August. PM me, I'll teach you some sure fire techniques to catch humpies until you are done catching humpies.

I should be able to run up the Snohomish with you if you want. We do a "Snoopy Pole" derby every other year when they run. The rules are simple. Respool with whatever you want, but it must be a character rod and it must cost less than $25.

I'm just sitting here watching the snow melt knowing I'll be fishing the big pond (Atlantic) three weeks from today out of St. Augustine. Didn't even get her out on the water last year so she's up for sale in a few weeks after owning her 25+ years.

Of course I still have this to fall back on (one of several I own or have access too) :p

Always using artificial lures on an assortment of spinning/baitcasting reels....pond is slammed full of 1-2lb bass and nice crappie....the double digit bass were "taken" (and probably eaten) some years back :(. Have fun guys...I can't wait...three weeks and counting....
