Woodworkers - Cocobola

I know there are a few woodworkers, knife makers, maybe some making pistol grips on this board...

I have a piece of Cocobola (purchased in the 80's) size is 48"x 10" x 1" that I never got around to using and I am no longer doing wood work.

Anyway just looking for a home for it where someone might put it to use. I have no idea of its value and really not to concerned about it. Ideally would love to trade it for a custom knife with some of it on the handle.....I know reaching for the stars

Bottom line would just like to find someone who could use it. It has got really dark over the years (pics attached) I could sand it if you would like to see the color underneath the patina.

Pm if interested
Mike

contact slodave, I'm sure he can put it to good use in making 911 shift knobs.

Yep, I am sure Slodave can use it. The last time I bought Cocobolo for a job was about 15 bucks a BF. This was about 4-5 years ago.

OOOOOOH OOOOOOH MR KOTTER......

You have inspired me to rumage the depths of my 99 year projects to uncover my cocobola parlor guitar sides....thanks!

Such a beautiful wood and I think some people are deathly allergic to it.
Also, as I remember, it needs some special glue or treatment because of it's resins. Also, I had forgotten how dense it is. The stuff weighs like lead.

Thanks for the thread! (makes me want to start a "show me your wood" thread)

Ron

nice lumber!! if you trust me, i can post a pic of it up on some custom knife maker forum..

i bet the guys line up to "make you a custom"..i dont know jack about knife scales, but i am sure they would still have to stabilize it.

worth a shot. a knife made with the stuff would be darn sweet.

I still have it....I no longer have the 911 so don't need a shift knob, however I'm sure they would be beautiful. How much of it would you need to make a few knobs. I interested in cutting it just because shipping would be so much cheaper in shorter lengths....plus it's really heavy.

Hi Mike,

I sent you another PM, I think the last one was without a title so it didn't go through.

Thanks,
Rutager

Cocobolo is a rosewood and is very oily and the dust can cause allergic reactions in many people; I wear a dust mask when I work it otherwise I get a "tickle" in my nose.

It would make a great knife handle and shouldn't need to be stabilized. Gluing can be difficult due to the oils- wiping it down with acetone and using epoxy is a good bet. It polishes up to a very high sheen.

Woodworkers - Cocobola

I'd be interested in some of it to turn a few pens if that could be worked out.

Mark,

I bought the board from Mike. I do have some small cocobolo pieces that I think would be big enough for pens. I also have some small Macassar ebony pieces as well. PM me the size of a pen blank and your address and I'll see what I can dig up.

Best,
Rutager

Very good acoustic guitar wood. Pisser to work with ( irritating dust, plugs abrasives instantly ), but well worth the effort. The "Freestyle" model on my website is built of it.

That's a nice looking piece. I assume gone by now...
