This has been on the books for many years...looks like it may be a reality very soon and it could change everything...

We were just told AI was, like, just never gonna happen ever because of the algorithms and stuff.

Skynet goes online August 4 1997, human decisions are removed from strategic defense, and begins to learn at a geometric rate, it becomes self aware on 2:14 AM August 29.

Artificial Intelligence is no match for Natural Stupidity.

What really scares me is "Grey Goo" or nano technology. Self replicating micro robots that could do whatever they want without our input of control.
If that was ever invented we'd be in real trouble. Just imagine trying to stop them entering your body so they can fix you without your consent.
But they could also be a real cure for aging. Nano bots fixing your cells so they replicate perfectly indefinitely. :D

Sounds like fun to me.

I've read enough about memristors over the last decade or so to be cautiously optimistic about how quickly/if it will be able to make an impact outside of a lab.

How do they know what they want? Are they truly sentient or do they just act on instinct (ie programming) like a reptile?

IF there was enough of them and they were able to communicate to each other they could act as a single mind.
So yes they would be "intelligent" but at first they would be programed to complete a specific task so they would act much like insects do.

"Sentient?" At some point in the future they or it could be but IMO that is a long way away. I don't think I'll see it in my life time.
