For years after Janis Joplin died, my father believed my mother when she told him Joan Biaz was a lesbian and died of a drug overdose. Which was really a shame considering he like Joan so much.

15 years later he picked up a paper and saw Joan Biaz was giving local concert. He turned to my mother and said, "Hey Anna remember that lesbian singer who died of an overdose? She's giving a concert here this Saturday night."

There is an easy way to avoid death hoaxes, (and especially spreading them); simply Google the person's name and it will immediately be clear whether they have died. Chain mails, rumors and wack-job web sites are not legit sources.
