had a good time ammo shopping today!

i'm being sarcastic. i called a new local store today. by "local" i mean this store is kinda far. with traffic, a nasty hour drive. i called them and asked.."do you have any 257 weatherby ammo?..120 gr?". "yes!" "okay, i am on my way" i get there, and find the woman that i guessed i had talked to. i told her i was the one that called about the 257 Weatherby ammo. she said, "oh yes, i put it aside for you". she hands me a box, and says, "it is "premium"ammo" (o-oh) i see it before i even touch the box. 257 ROBERTS. i repeat my ammo..and she says, "this wont work?" "no, i shoot a weatherby..i need 257 weatheryby" "oh..(she looks on a sheet of paper).."i have 270 weatherby, will that work?" i think i kinda blanked out after that. next thing i realized..i was in my truck, starting it up, and pondering my brutal traffic jam drive home. This is a huge gun superstore..in Dublin CA. it is huge, shiney, and brand new. huge gun inventory..the rest of the inventory sucks. they had ONE SINGLE turkey call. one!

Knowledgeable people behind the gun counter are invaluable. Or the auto parts counter, or at the hardware store, or... We simply don't find them at the big box stores, however. She was busing tables the week before you met her... just a job, with no training, no nothing. Lesson learned - you should have made her read the information on the end of the box to you, verbatim.

what was annoying. the store was set up so the glass counter was about 8-9 feet from the wall shelves full of ammo. they made it so the customer cannot even read the boxes!! not even young healthy eyes. i commented and asked why the counter was set so far..she thought it was a strange question. i didnt even waste the breath to ask if they had any .22.

Haha! It is only mail order for me unless I go to the toy store anyway. Some cities / counties in CA now want a fingerprint and a copy of your DL to buy ammo. Best case they will run your name against a criminal database ... No thanks ... G

I had a similar experience last year but mine worked the other way. I called Gander Mt, and asked if they had a specific rifle in stock and gave them the stock number, guy said yes, I asked him if he was sure because I didn't want to make a fruitless hour drive, he assured me he had it. I got his name, gave him mine and off to the store I went. Yeah it was a south-paw rifle. Well I walked out with a much more expensive rifle for the price of the one I was looking for. They won a customer that day. Customer service means everything

Co-Ax ® Press with "S" jaws, Model B3 - Forster Products The time you spent driving to and from the store that didn't have your ammo could have been better spent.

Counter people can sometimes be lifelong sportsmen that know everything there is to know about guns/ammo. But usually, anymore it is the newbie high school graduate who's uncle got them thier first job, and they only know to look in the computer, they don't have any hands on knowledge or skill of what they are trying to sell. I prefer the Mom n Pop gun shops on the scenic byways for good advice, and service rather than the big box stores.

Everytime I look for mail order ammo, the shipping charges just kill the deal for me.

I did reload. But in my experience, I lost the weatherby advantage with my loads. Turned my rifle into a 25-06. I called around and some hornady guy told me nobody can match velocities with the proprietary powder weatherby cooks up. I lost a few hundred fps with all my loads. I gave it up. I don't shoot a rifle enough to justify it. I'm almost all archery now. But I did just pay into a hunting lease. Figured pork meat might be worth a bullet or two.

I never have that problem........cast bullets and black powder stuffed down the muzzle make everything all right! If a "hobby" makes someone that stressed then it seems to me for a change in the hobby?

Thanks for the links! Still looks like most everyone is out of .22LR. Unless you want match ammo.
