Do busniess with a salvage yard that only accpets cash or wire transfer?
I found a motor I need in upstate New York. The do not accept credit cards, or checks The only way he will accept payment for an out of state transaction, is cash, Postal money order, or bank wire .
Raise a red flag for you?. This is a $4k$ purchase, My customer does not like the idea. I told him to drive up and get it, check it over himself, and pay on the spot.

Doesn't raise a red flag for me. He's just looking for secure funds. My decision would be based on his reputation.

I understand not taking checks, but not taking credit cards is severely hampering his business across state lines and long distances. I know several local businesses who don't take credit cards because they can't charge the customer more for the fees involved. It seems like a rather nearsighted and out of date policy, but some people are scared of technology.
It doesn't really raise a red flag, but just really inconvenient. |

You only have to look at some of the transactions in our own classifieds section to see his POV.
Often times buyer and seller impressions of the same used item varies greatly. Him selling site unseen via funds that have remediation advantages for the buyer is not in his best interest. Not a red flag for me.

They may not be able to surcharge the merchant fees, but they can build them into all prices and then discount for cash.

Do you offer installation services as well? Just have it here, and done by Friday, and after I collect from the customer, I will send you the cash. J.K. If you , or anybody you know has heard anything about them, I would appreciate it. Google did not turn up much with a quick search. I buy used parts daily from all over the country, and this is a first for me. Sometimes if they are too much of a pain in the arse to deal with, there is a reason. Thanks guys

Red flag? YES! Absolutely! Unless I had the part in hand I would not pay by any of those methods. There is an infamous guy in western PA who preys on people gullible enough to send money by these methods expecting it to be delivered or at the given address for pickup. He's not the only one of course, but he's been in business for years. He was even running his scam from jail a couple of years ago.

Luddites. I wouldn't do business with them just because I dislike businesses that think that inconveniencing customers is a good business model.
I take any form of payment a customer wants to provide. Money is money and the customer is always right. A wise guy I used to work with used to say "never let a nickel hold up a dollar". Good advice. I think it applies here to that seller.

Not everywhere takes cheques. Up here you can pay your utilities with them but that's about all. Very few business's take them. I know that in the USA if you write a cheque and it's NSF the police come get you. Maybe he got burnt once and that's his policy now.
A cheque bounces and he's got to call the police and testify or a CC charge gets reversed and he has to screw around getting his money. Cash is king.

You gota remember you're dealing with an upstate NY salvage yard person. They live differently up there than the rest of us down here and I'm particularly addressing salvage yards in particular. They're a independent bunch from my experience and could probably care less about losing out of state business. My guess is most of his yard is under 10 ft of snow and he's watching reruns of Baywatch to stay warm. That's a heck of a hike up there from where you are, but for a $4000 engine that's hard to get, I would consider going to get it myself. I've certainly done dumber things. It's probably a long day up & back, but at the end of it you know what you bought. Just my 2 cents.

When I worked in Lake Placid I started dating a girl who lived over near Saranac Lake. If I drove over to get here I never got out of the car, banjo playing makes me nervous.

And the point is, your "girlfriend" wouldn't take a check?

Maybe he doesn't want any back charges in case something goes wrong. With his payment choices, no one can get their money back.
I think your customer has to make the call there, Fred. I wouldn't stick my neck out if I were you. The longer I stay in business the more picky I am at what jobs I get involved in. Sometimes it's better to decline the work. That said - good luck with whatever you decide!!!!
