I think I have posted this before. The pack waited for my neighbor to take his dog for a walk. A little coyote was sent to wild up the dogs and took off sending the dogs chasing after the pup. He lost grip and one of the dog followed the coyote into the ravine. As soon as the dog set foot down there, 4 of the larger coyote came out and went after the dog. Other dogs went to help, as soon as Jim arrived, they all scattered. the dog was bitten several time included his tail was hanging on by the skin. Several holes around his neck and belly. This all happened within a man running 100' down some grassy pathway at full speed.

You might be lucky your dog doesn't use the doggie door or you could have a coyote in the house.

I see you're in SoCal. If you see the varmint regularly, in all seriousness I'll bring Tank over. I've done it for my neighbors. PM me.

He's killed two now and absolutely hates them. If we slow the coyote up with a CB sub-sonic, Tank can catch him. The neighbors and authorities don't need to know a thing. …The 3-S rule (Shoot, shovel, and shut up).

My neighbors threw a birthday party for the 5 year-old. In the middle of the party a coyote jumped the wall and grabbed their maltese, then went back over the wall with the dog in it's mouth. The kids were horrified. I now have ZERO sympathy for coyotes.

Use an electronic game call, wounded rabbit. When they get in range, let them have it.

That is the method used around here.

I have never done it, I quit hunting years ago but coyotes might be fun. A pack of them in range of my MP5, I could put the hurt on them.

Coyotes are one of the few animals I would have no problem shooting. A pack means danger to the entire neighborhood.

This is all you need. Sounds like a hand clap. Good for at least 50 yards.

Like I said, I think my dog can hold his own against one coyote, but not four that come in the yard. Smart buggers too, they will have a female in heat lead a male dog out and then kill him. A pack will surround a dog and one will tear its Achilles heel and hobble him and then go for the kill.

When my MIL was alive and living with us she'd leave her door open for her rat dog. One night after going in the hot tub, a little drunk, I came out and kicked a baby rattler in my hallway. Nothing like trying to gently cut the head off of a rattler with a shovel on my brand new hardwood floors!

Geezus! I am militant about keeping doors closed and I still worry about critters getting in. No point in helping them.

I'll echo Craig's suggestion--shoot and shovel. No reason to call warden after dispatching them. Coyotes are cunning and a menace--every year we shoot several off our property.

I know someone with a silenced bolt action .300 blackout. Perfect for this task. ;)

You guys are right about calling the LEO. I caught a rat in a trap once outside and meant to dispose of it later that day. The next day there was NOTHING left in the trap. Where I live it's pretty clear that you aren't at the top of the food chain.

My brother has a bolt action Remington 22 that would be just the ticket for this sort of work. Very quiet and accurate. If your wife is out and about near dawn or dusk, she ought to carry some bear/pepper spray, just in case they need to be discouraged, unless she is agreeable to carrying something that would hit a bit harder.

Good chance they are too clever to trap anyway, but that is a pretty good option. Trap with the critter in it in a big box with some dryer hose that runs to the 911 exhaust works well and quickly, Camry hybrid would take forever probably.


Talk to your neighbors before the fact.

My tenant is a damn good hunter (WV backwoodsman, sniper), and though he only "hunts" to put meat in his freezer, this is a technique he uses for "sport". I don't think I'd do that on "my" properties (within city limits), but out in the country is a different matter entirely. I'm "in the city", but live in the middle of my former boy scout camp with a coyote "buffet" (farm pond) less than 50' from my back deck....coyotes don't know it's in the city either :cool:

Toby, you make me laugh. True story, years ago I worked for a motion picture organization and one of our executives decided to off himself. He put his twin infant daughters in the back of his Saab 99e and a hose from the tail pipe into the passenger compartment, and started drinking. A few hours later the wifey found him passed out, and all three alive. It turns out that newer cars don't put out enough carbon monoxide to kill you. The moral of the story is that you if you want to kill yourself, use a 66 Impala.

All my neighbors that border my side of a 20 acre "farm" are OK with it, but I think I just told them what I was gonna do....I wasn't exactly "asking for permission" either ;). In other words, I wouldn't even bring it up if I thought a neighbor would oppose...as my LEO tenant told me...."you do what you gotta do...".

the county animal control guy who said it's okay to shoot them will pretend he never met you if the question comes up.

grew up in the midwest next to a dairy. dairymen hate coyotes more than you can imagine. the preferred way was to use atvs and spotlights predawn.






lived in north l.a. county for a while near castaic. neighbor had a coyote golden retriever hybrid. beautiful dog. shaped like a coyote, but made of retriever fluff. good with people, but hair trigger predatory with any animal smaller than it.
