				Got Old Growth Wood?

Old Growth Stump in the front yard of my ranch couple hours from Seattle. I've counted 40 rings per inch on some pieces, this close-up sample is from just the outer bark area of a 6 foot diameter stump. the trees growing out of it are 12-15" diameter for scale. Stump has Spring board notches and they had to cut it up about 12 foot off the ground to be able to handle the butt end of the trunk size

Occasionally, but in my experience old growth wood is rare and fleeting, sometimes it beats your 2 3/4 inches and it has great nostalgic value.

Is it Fir, or Red Cedar. If it's Cedar there's some money there in acoustic guitar tops. -C freebornguitars.com

| Now in 993 land ... |
Must be redwood. 40 rings per inch on a 3 foot radius adds up to close to 1500 years. Even at 2/3 the growth rate in earlier years you'll look >1000 years old. A shame the thing got cut ... I mountain bike through patches of redwood and the old growth intact trees are few and even marked on park maps. I visit them some times and just stand there gazing up - so amazing ... G | ||

It would be cool to do a little Dendrocronology on that stump. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dendrochronology

That would be very good stock for building a small boat. I imagine someone from a boat (classic) building concern would like to have it. As others have said, please don't waste it.

Doug Fir. an hour from my house, hiking in the Cascades. It's amazing what real trees used to look like. now it's a 40 year farmed product where you get 4-5 rings per inch at Lowes or Home Depot, and that 4x4" post with 3 rounded corners is the core of a tree with its bark shaved off.
