Ford EcoBoost V6 reliability?

The Rustang with the Ecoboost V6 looks intriguing... 300HP and 30MPG.

Sounds like it might make a decent little commuter, but I would be buying used so I am a little concerned that squeezing that much HP out of a V6 might hurt the reliability.

Anyone here running a V6 Ecoboost and if so how has it been working for you?

TIA

I don't have any data and have never owned one, but the upcoming 2016 Ford GT, the $400k supercar is supposed to have a twin turbo ecoboost V6 making +600 hp. That one may be a little different than the one in the mustang though.

The Ecoboost Mustang is a 4-cylinder. Similar engines are used across their lineup and I haven't heard of any reliability issues.

I've got the 2.5l ecoboost in my escape and it's been trouble free for the 7700 miles I've driven it since new in October. My folks have an ST with similar miles and its been fine. Only issue they've had was bad battery. But that's from sitting too much!

Have the 1.6 Ecoboost in my Fiesta ST. I've had it about a year and a half and so far no issues, even with a Stage 1 Cobb tune.

How many years have they been putting the 4-banger in the Mustang? A quick autotrader search only show 2014-2015 I4 Mustangs.

Just searching "ecoboost 4"
I get a Ford Escape, very functional car and mini SUV would be super handy... but "looks like it fell out of the ugly tree" as they say.

Next is the Fusion, not as functional as the Escape but looks I could live with.

Oh wait, The Edge!

I know, I know... I started off talking about Mustangs... but I am having a paradigm shift to something for the wife to drive/that we can haul stuff with.

Maybe trading the Miata for something a little more comfy (Mustang) will have to wait.

The Ecoboost is new to the Mustang for 2015, I think it's the first 4-cylinder offered in a Mustang since the 1980s SVO. They still offer the 300 HP V6 as the base engine.

My wife has a Flex with the 6 Cyl Ecoboost. Had it for about four years. It has gobs of power...very fun to drive, despite the car being a brick, but comes in at about 20 MPG overall. Our company has a number of F150s with the Ecoboost also. None of them get very good mileage. Range from 14 to 18 max. MPG depends entirely on the driver. This engine is so much fun, there tends to be a problem keeping the thing in economy mode, so to speak. Note that our speed limits are 70+, so lower speeds may result in better mileage...but I doubt it, the thing is just too much fun!

To the OP, I was pondering EcoBoost reliability sitting in traffic Friday.

The Expedition in front of me apparently has that engine now as well. I get it in the cars, but My gut tells me the truck platform is a lot of stress... What do I know.

The early truck Ecoboost V6 had an intake issue that led to condensation in humid environments, sometimes leading to stuttering under acceleration. I think the fix was a new intercooler. That's the only issue I recall reading about.

They hauled ass too!

I have to amend my statement, because they put 4-cylinders in the terrible base Mustangs in the 1980s. I think it's the first TURBO 4-cylinder since the SVO.

I always wondered why they never put the SHO V6 in the Mustang. It could have worked in a RWD layout

Friend of mine had a Mustang SVO. Cool cars

I have a friend that bought a new F150 w/ecoboost V6 when they first came out a couple of years ago. No problems to date. When cruising with a light foot on the interstate it gets 25+ mpg. Probably 17-18 in town. The 4 cylinder turbo in the Mustang requires premium gas as does the 5.0 V8. The standard V6 is the only engine rated for 87 octane regular gas.

Neither require premium fuel. I believe they say that 91 is "recommended for maximum performance" or something to that effect. I checked the EPA fuel economy website which has the MPG ratings with regular 87 octane. Ford shows premium under "recommended octane".
