Another Opinion Poll Regarding Porsche Purchase

This is on the topic of a couple recent threads, so I thought I'd get opinions (first world problem I know).

My backdate lightweight hotrod sold last weekend for almost twice what I thought it would ever be worth (The 911 market is truly insane right now ). It took me a year to restore it, but I had a blast driving it for two years.

I originally planned to do it all over again, only starting with a real SWB tub and building a 911R tribute. After a week of research, I've found everything from paint and body, early chassis, motor work, even people online selling parts have ALL skyrocketed in price with the rising finished car prices. I can't even do it at a break even at this point (not counting 200 hours of my own labor). …And can the market even sustain these prices?

A friend just bought a beautiful low-mileage 996TT for $40K!!! He's loving it. A/C, heater, stereo, bluetooth, and plenty of HP. It's got me thinking. What would you guys do…buy a 996TT, put a chunk of cash in the savings or buy a rental house and forgetaboutit? Or, start the restoration process all over again and hope the market stays hot?

Couldn't sleep last night, so I took to trolling online classifieds. Found 3 interesting 996tt's for sale right now in the $38-39K range. Just wish Sonnen Porsche wasn't so far away in NorCal...

TT. Oceans of fun, and I think prices will be stable at this point.

You can always pick up a tub and wait for deals to come along on restoring it. In the meantime, get the TT and have some fun. I'm not afraid to travel to get a good deal on a nice car. I live in Northern Ohio and traveled to Lexington Ky for my wife's car and I found a deal in Buffalo NY for my current 944.

Sometimes people just don't know what something is worth, and a good deal on a lightly used car can be found.

That settles it. I'm on the hunt!

If anybody knows of a good one (other than Rennlist, Autotrader, and LA Craigslist, where I'm already watching), let me know. There's a very nice bottle of scotch or red wine to the finder

Sometimes (ok, most of the time for me at least) the hunt is more fun than the kill. Good luck, keep us posted!

Just like restoring a car. I bore with it the day it's finished. I always say it's the journey, not the destination.

Another vote for the TT... life is short, if I had $40K I know that is what I would do... I enjoy fixing up old cars but yeah, it would be no contest for me.

You sold the green car? Too bad, that thing was awesome.

If the restoring it is what you like, what are you going to do with a new one, aside from drive it so fast your watch will be wrong when you get there? Maybe do a 914-6 with a tarted up flat six, for something different, though that is sort of like dating an ugly girl that is great in the sack and has a good personality, not that there is anything wrong with that.

LOL…Good 914 hot rod analogy! Actually, I would't mind a nice stock 914 2.0, but try finding one.

Yeah, the green car is gone. Paul Kramer at Autokennel had a buyer at an offer I couldn't refuse. When people started throwing crazy numbers at me I became afraid to drive it. Plus, it was so loud and raw that my wife wouldn't ride in it. I had a lot of fun restoring it, but I want a no-brainer for a while.

Another TT vote. Fantastic bulletproof cars. If you get bored huge power is just a tune and a few bolt ons away. Even more bored? Install some PSS9s and lose the front driveshafts and you have a budget GT2.

STOP! Or I'll make you buy dinner Tue night! Im already ADD/OCD and this TT-to-GT2 sounds like a slippery slope. Please retract post above.

I am so going to feed that fire on Tuesday night. Should I post the 996TT weight loss thread from 6speedonline too?

I can already see where this is going. Next I'll be bolting a lap transponder to the chassis.

Go for the TT. I love my 996 twin turbo. And my guess would be that you would like it too.

If you go with the TT can you get back into and early car at some point in the future?

They're only going one way in value.
