High HP cars on the Street...but how high?

Having a high horse power car has a certain brag rights but just how high are some of these that are out there? I saw some vids of some mod'd up cars that claim well over 1000hp and they were on the streets. I claim BS but then again maybe I should keep my mouth shut until I know the facts.

Are there cars on the street with over 1000hp? What's the highest you have heard about? I would think anything that could take you from 0-60 in less then 4 seconds is plenty (and horse power is important but so is weight and handling) but then again I am old, feeble, and stupid...so what do I know.

The Dodge Hellcat Challenger comes to mind, and that is a stock, off the shelf car. 707 HP.

Do people run over 1000 HP on the street ? Absolutely. I know people who run 800 HP Subarus. Those start out with 2.5 liters of displacement.

There are plenty of streetable cars with 1000 HP. Slap a supercharger on a built big block V8 and you're getting reasonably close. At some point it becomes irrelevant, as they can't put the power down anyway. That's why the 911TT is so brutally fast even with less power, it can use every HP with AWD.

I think once you get into the 400s it becomes unusable for the street. Which isn't to say it still won't be fun. Partial throttle blasts in my 450 HP C63 were giggle inducing. I have a Roush Stage 3 Hyper Mustang with 540 HP on the way, that should be entertaining.

I used to have a car with 425HP and 2900 pounds, and it didn't feel fast at all. 1000HP with 4000 pounds must feel pretty amazing.

This vee-HIC-le has 2500 hp, and the owner drove it on the road over 1000 miles last year during Hot Rod Magazine's Drag week.

Lots of haters in the comments, but to be sure, it is a street legal car designed to go as fast as possible in a quarter mile. He makes some changes to go from street to strip, (tires, fuel, mufflers, etc,) but it's built to the rules that the event organizers mandate, and it passes inspection in the town he lives in.

There are plenty of vehicles these days that stock come with 500-700hp. Back in the day, there were lots of Supras that were supposed to be in the 800-1000 range. These days, you see on youtube plenty of videos of Ford GTs with crazy +1000hp numbers (some reported as high as 1500, I think) and there are similar claims for various lambos, corvettes, SKyline, etc.... These days with computer designed motors and computer controlled motors it doesn't seem to be too hard to slap a turbo or supercharger on the right kind of motor and get silly power.

This. In my experience, anything over 550whp on the street with a decent tire is potentially a waste and most definitely dangerous...unless it's being delivered to all wheels. GTR, subies, evos, lambos, TT 911s seem to be making all the noise these days. They put the power down and do it consistently.

I have buddies with American street cars ranging from 650-1200whp...and unlike the tv depiction (where they have time and the road is track prepped) these cars are wild, dangerous, and plain silly.

It is something to see an 80-140mph roll race and both cars are swaying while laying rubber the entire pull.

I've driven a friend's 500+hp Lamborghini a fair amount, and while an awesome car on the track, you can't step on the gas for any more than a couple seconds when driving on public roads.

What fun is that?

I get far more enjoyment driving the little Miata with a 1.6 liter 4-banger. I can drive it hard, really hard, foot buried in the carpet, bouncing off the rev limiter, drifting around corners, without attracting attention from law enforcement, because it's still not going very fast.

An absolute HOOT!
