I met a ricer this morning

This morning on my way to work, I was alone on the left lane of a 50mph two lane road, after a rather healthy acceleration that I always enjoy because of the nice sound I hear in the back of the car when I pass over the bridge. We all have our little pleasures and habits, I guess . Then I slowed down because a car was in front of me, and I don`t like to scare people by slamming in their butt (elementary courtesy, although I noticed that Navigators, Expeditions and the same often tend to do the opposite...). Anyway, so I am back under the speed limit, when I look in my rearview mirror and see a black Acura arriving very fast on the right lane.
He must have spotted me and felt like having a 911 for his breakfast. His choice was to pass me on the right, but there was a car on my right. He was arriving way to fast, and he did not have the space to pass me. But the stupid little jerk did it anyway, sqeezing between the two cars, almost causing an accident. I think there is a wide market of parts for ricers, except the most important one: a brain

I read the armour all thread. HAHAHA ! That was a great one, that put me back in good mood. I have another story : Here is what happens when the two drivers have no brain...That was 3 weeks ago at the entrance of the Holland Tunnel. Two lanes were merging into one, and two ricers were side by side, none of them willing to give way. Well, guess what, they just kept going until their cars touched, and the lane was totally blocked for several minutes while they were arguing and checking the minor damage.
Human stupidity at its best...

All of these stories tell the same tale. Some people are idiots.

You can, with out a doubt, instert the word "911" into every story in the place of "ricer", "mustang", or whatever. I have seen some ungodly rude behavior by Porsche drivers. It's the DRIVER not necessarily the car.

That same exact story as told at the begining of this thread happened to me and my wife years ago. The only difference is that we were in a Honda, the offensive a-hole was in a Turbo Cab, and the blocking car in the right lane was a fully loaded 18 wheeler. Damn near killed us all.

I play "get by if you can" all the time. I drive in the left lane. I dictate the pace. If you want to pass me on the right, you had better have some HP, 'cause I'll floor it when you try.
I do this all the time. It's a blast. I usually win, of course.

Sometimes I encourage ricers by moving in the right lane if the freeway is empty. "go on..don't mind the old man." When they zoom by, I lower the hammer, and burst a few car lengths ahead and go back into the left lane. "Just kidding. You can't pass me."

Wow, I outgrew "nobody can pass me - I own the road" driving like that before I was 20.

I hate people like that - I may have my cruise set to 76 mph and you are doing 74 in the left lane. I have to slow down for you. You won't get get over. I finally have to pass on the right. You accelerate and won't let me. Now I am stuck - do I just go slower because you want me too? I'm just trying to get down the road at the speed I desire and I may not want to play games at that time.

P.S. I've raced with the best of them, but I don't like being forced into a race just to keep going at my desired pace.

You bad boy Kurt ! I was gonna floor it too this morning, but my brain reconnected just in time. Had I closed the way to the ricer, he would have hit the car that was on my right, most likely...and I don`t need to indirectly provoke an accident. Yes, there are also idiots in 911. There are idiots everywhere. I even fear I am surrounded by them. And I try not to become one of them...which implies I leave my ego, my pryde, my male instinct aside sometimes, and it can be a great feeling too. I wonder though , if there might not be more idiots among ricers But the reason, I think, is simply that ricers are younger. And it is known that there is a correlation between male agressivity behing the wheel and testostrone levels in the blood

Kurt, you should think twice when you pull crap like that. I have an anger control management problem, plus a number of years of combat training, and if I encountered you acting like that (family or no family in the car with me), I'd push you to the extremes and hope that it would end with you an me squaring off on the side of the freeway. Then we'd see who owns the road, little girl.

I've been driving the bus while the 911 is down with a broken steering rack. Taking the slow boat gives me a different viewpoint on the driving going on around me.

For example, yesterday on the way home, I witnessed two un-freakin-believable rice moves.

The first one was at the scales on w/b 80, between Roseville and Sacramento. Traffic was moving a bit sluggish, and the scales were closed. A bold, enterprising ricer decided to use the scales as a route around the rest of the pack - he shot thru the scales at what had to be 60+. Unfortunately, there were 2 CHP bikers kickin' it behind the scale office. I say "unfortunately" because they were so involved in their male bonding or whatever motorcycle cops do behind buildings, that the didn't give him the time of day.

The second episode was at the corner of Winding Way & Auburn Blvd. I was thurning left onto Winding, as were a zillion cars in front of me and behind me, when a ricer comes up in the #1 (non-turn) lane, and turns left, screaming (farting) and squealing around the cars that are turning, passing them all on the right thru the turn.

Deep breaths and let it go - great practice for not letting the day get the best of you. One thing you KNOW: they will get their karmic return in spades. You just have to hope they don't take someone else out when they do.

John

EDIT: PS: Just wait until all those oversized SUVs trickle down to the price range of entry-level drivers as the bottom falls out of that market. You think we've got problems now...

I met one yesterday. The computer guy who sets up the computers in my office. He went on and on about this great way to convert his headlights to obtain a "euro violet" light beam. After he fully explained himself for about 10 minutes, I just asked him how much faster that makes his car and left it at that.

Kurt, I didn't know . . . you are a . . . . LEFT LANE BANDIT!!

Old people in Buicks do that same thing, "dictating the pace" in the fast lane. And, a lot of those blue hairs will actually try to speed up if you pull to the right to try to pass them.

I drive in the fast lane, too. But no matter how fast I'm going, if a car comes up behind me, I move over to the next lane and let them pass.

Blocking the fast lane, forcing people to try to pass on your right, then speeding up so they can't . . . nice work!

Hmm...i'm behind Rarley on this issue.

First of all, you have pretty peculiar driving discipline in US. In sweden (and i believe most of europe) left lane is for overtaking only. You are supposed to get back into right lane when your overtaking manouver is done. Also, if somebody is passing you, you should do everything to make it easier for him, starting to accellerate when somebody begins overtaking you is criminal here. Generally, it's not allowed to pass somebody on the right side and such thing, if seen by police, will get you charged...it's only allowed on multi-lane road in case that queues develop.

This kind of wild behaviour (that Aurel talks about) is usually reserved for testosterone-ladden youngsters (often car-enthusiasts). Not everybody can afford P-car, so you'll see them in ricers more often.

First off, I've fed Exed some tissues to those of you who are crying all over your keyboards.

Look. You guys act like I go 60 mph in the left lane, blocking traffic. Like there are minivans on my ass trying to get by.

No folks. I'm talking 85mph (see note) on an open road taking the 210 east at 11pm at night.

There are no Minivans...or Ranger Ricks [above] with his family in his car (who wants to kick my @ss on the side of the road) tryin to get by me.

I'm talking Ricers. Not a minivan full of 'tards and salivating morons in wheelchairs stacked up behind me as I go 45 mph; trying to inch by me in the right lane, waving and being polite as I lower the ax and smoke em, changing lanes suddenly and sending the minivan full of 'tards straight to the lap of God.
No.
No.

Note: This is a randomly generated integer value. It is not a confession of any kind as I have never travelled "85MPH" on any US highway.

Goran,

That's the way it's supposed to be... It's the logical way to drive and everything moves smoother when people think that way. But way too many people in this country either don't think about the overall flow of traffic or have big egos or just a big chip on their shoulder. It is way too common to see an idiot driving the speed limit or under in the left lane while other idiot take dangerous chances with others lives to get around them. And the more crowded it gets the worse the situation.

Goran, I'm moving to Sweden. It sounds like driver's Mecca. I have two sons, and besides teaching them not to let testosterone levels overtake common sense (like their father does sometimes), I will teach them *NEVER* under any circumstances should they obstruct traffic. If someone is trying to get by, let them go. There is no reason to obstruct, EVER. You don't do it with ambulances and you shouldn't do it with other cars.

Europe

the Europeans have that totally figured out....driving all over Germany, and Italy...every time I came up on someone in the left lane they immediately moved over. Also when going 100 mph in the left lane and a big sled Merc or Maserati comes up from behind going 130 you can bet I got the hell out of the way also......
