I punched a hole up between the banks this afternoon so I could check on the MIL and Aunt (84 and 94 respectively). It was drifting back in within an hour. I've got a place just above the barn where the drifts are reaching 8'. It's not drifting deep there any more, but just above that is getting to 4' now. Usually it blows clear, but with all the snow I've blown off the driveway, there are now berms a couple of feet high on each side. Just as soon as the wind picks up the powder, it drops it between the berms.
The winds are supposed to drop by noon Thursday. I'll get things blown out properly then.

The way it was explained to me by a meterologist was something like this: When you have periods of deep cold over the Arctic, the polar jet is rather stable. When there is less of a temperature differential, the polar jet tends to get drawn south and then swings north again, creating a ragged sine wave over the northern hemisphere. The cold winds, going further south than normal, pick up moisture and dump it further along.
Back in November, it was Buffalo, this time it's us.

It is great Les that you are able to have MIL and aunt close by and presumably not in an old folks home? You would think that the govt. would send the military to dig out folks on the East Coast....

All of the snow leaves me wondering how much of it will remain through the summer in areas where it typically melts completely? Obviously at lower elevations and latitudes this won't happen but what about higher up and farther north?

That is a good question Steve. In the higher elevations such as the mountains and mountain passes glaciers can remain. Glaciers are essentially snow and ice which are formed over the years through snow falling, melting and refreezing. The north country has intense summers and even though 80F would be a typical high the sun can be out for as much as 18 hours a day so there is very little cooling. North of the tree line where there are no more trees the summer is typically short namely about three months and it is snow free then but as you get towards the northern Arctic regions there is year round ice and snow.

I think all the snow/ice that usually builds up on the polar ice caps is now deposited in your front yard, obviously the people screaming the loudest about global warming and the shrinking of the ice caps don't live in your area. (mostly Kalifornians who aare in a drought).

Wow that's a lot warmer than I thought. I guess only a year is far too short of an observational period but it would be interesting if there was a measurable increase in glaciation up there. It would support Ewing and Donn Climate Theory, especially if it continued over time.

That makes sense to me. High pressure pushing south, picking up moisture and cycling back and forth. Yup, makes sense to me. BTW our forecast is up to 10-12 cm for tomorrow. Sigh.

Because the snow was very light, I got my 1/4 mile long driveway blown out (and scraped down) in just four hours this morning. I still have to clear out the area where we park the cars and the truck has to be dug out of a drift, but the end is in sight. ;)

Across from the barn, I have to move the snow with the blade because the drift on the west side is about ten feet high and the blower just won't throw snow over it. However today is a beautiful day and Saturday is the first day of Spring.

This summer the tourists who bring their skies to Nova Scotia just might have the last laugh!

Guy, don't make me laugh! You know the government is hardly aware there is anything past Quebec City. ;)

Very glad to have the MIL close by. She is a wonderful woman. Just had her second knee replacement in November and was out yesterday cleaning off her doorstep! I know many complain about their in-laws, but I think I got the best there were. (Although my wife used to debate me on that one. :D)

Wow, aren't you worried about what the salt is going to do to that car? I don't drive mine until 100% of the snow is gone and there have been at least three good rains to wash all remnant traces of NaCl away.

Around here on a quiet night you can practically hear the cars' undercarriages, suspensions and exhausts corroding from it. I wouldn't dare drive anything I really care about until the corrosives are gone.

I scouted out a route to the nearest gas pumps and back in my winter beater. The roads I took were dry, just a couple of damp spots.

I understand your concern, and it's good advice to avoid salted roads.

About a 5 hour drive west from here is the Athabasca Glacier in the Rockies. If you go up there to take a ride in the snow coach nearbye is where the glacier has retreated. It has little signposts showing where the glacier was since the early 1900's. It is hard for the Eastcoasters to understand because of the terrible winter they are having but I think it is a true indicator of global warming.
